Fukuoka prefectural police on Monday arrested an unemployed 36-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 24-year-old woman in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, on Saturday.
According to police, the suspect, who lived in the same apartment building as the victim, identified as Sayaka Nihara, 24, broke into her 4th-floor apartment after apparently trying to break into other apartments on the building's third and fourth floors. Nihara's door was not locked, police said.
Police believe that the victim and the suspect were not well acquainted and that it was a random attack. The suspect has admitted to the charge, police said. He was quoted as saying he stabbed the woman with a knife he had brought with him, but gave no motive for the attack.

THE DEBATE: Employed + Good outlook = No crimes ? Unemployed + grim outlook = horrendous crimes ?
If he had a great full time job would he have committed these crimes ?
A guy with nothing to do, has an idea to kill or burglarize apartments ? Hmmmmm, the mind ponders and will dwell on this interesting topic.

oh my goodness how awful. And so unlucky for that girl. Lock your doors.

Another nut case makes a random attack on innocent victim, how often do we read about these types of crimes in this country, what is it with the amount of whakos in this land
nath
unemployed? big surprise!

Crazy really comes in different packages...
nisegaijin
Jesus! that's horrible. but yet not unusual for this country. i think tazers, non-lethal firearams, alarms and better security should be more widely available.
IfeelImust
Yep, lock your doors wherever you live!
JA_Cruise
Just ridiculous, how can anyone soundly sleep at night without locking their doors. You hear about this sort of stuff in the countryside.
himehentai
how do you know she was asleep JA cruise? Was the attack at night?
I know myself in the evening when you are coming home with all your work stuff, bags of shopping, umbrellas and struggling with shoes in the genkan how easy it is to forget to lock the door as you come in. But yes... lock your doors.

Given the huge violent death rate in Japan yes it makes sense to take every possible precaution. Locking your door should be a minimum. Keeping a knife handy at all times is also advisable.
Gurukun
Knife against knife? Naw, keep a baseball bat handy.
snackswithbeer
Good point with the baseball bat. Keep a bat next to the bed, a large knife in each of your other rooms plus a legally-sized knife on your person when you go out.

Gone are the days when you could sleep in your Japanese home with the doors unlocked. Its sad! Time to leave Japan! Safety was the most attractive thing Japan could offer, and its gone!
palanteboricua
I get quite a fear schock when noticing the door was left unlocked all night!! Gosh...safety is taken for granted. Nowadays, single locks won't do any justice! Door-knob lock, side-pad lock and latch your doors....
haruka
Why would he break the door down if it was not locked. This guy is crazy. Kills the poor woman, and probably had no motive. Lock him up and toss the key.
moonbeams
That's awfully sad.
To tell the truth, I never lock my door while I'm home.
fishy
haruka-
break down, is just an expression in english. the guy did not literally break the door. i guess in japanese you could use the word 侵入する。
atamant
The expression is 'break in', not break down. The man is said to have broken into the apartment.
fishy
aw.. my bad. i typed so quick and made the mistake :( thanx atamant :) but haruka, the guy did not break the door.
Zenny11
A few thoughts.
"Breaking in" can come via the windows, balcony door, etc. Article don't specify "point of entry".
If the front-door was unlocked and he entered via it without damaging the door it would be "trespassing" not "breaking and entering".
Either way horrible crime.
haruka
Thanks for the information.

Horrible news! And she probably thought she was safer living up on the 3rd? 4th? floor right? Most Japanese ladies do not want to live in on the first floor of any building for safety reasons, but it is sickening to read this kind of news! I really hope this 36 looser gets the death penalty ASAP!
