A 34-year-old man has been arrested for breaking and entering into many private residences on approximately 80 separate occasions, police said Wednesday. The suspect in question allegedly befriended a number of other individuals on a website and formed a group for the sole purpose of stealing and other illegal activities.
According to police, Hirofumi Takei, a construction worker from Yashio City, Saitama Prefecture, was charged with breaking into an apartment in Ichikawa City with his 33-year-old accomplice Takashi Motomura who police had already apprehended, in January.
The two suspects stole from the apartment approximately 30,000 yen, Fuji TV reported. Takei has disputed the charges, saying that all he had done was drive the car that transported the burglars.
Police said they have learned that Takei befriended seven other individuals online last October, and with the group, carried out 80 similar jobs within the Tokyo and Chiba areas.
Officials estimate that the total amount stolen by the group may exceed 13 million yen.© Japan Today
