Man arrested for pointing bamboo sword at police box consultant

Police in Shizuoka City have arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of threatening a 62-year-old woman who works as a koban (police box) consultant, with a bamboo sword.

According to local media reports, the suspect entered the Shizuhata police box in Aoi Ward at around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He then pointed a bamboo sword, similar to ones used in kendo, at the woman. At the time, the woman was alone in the police box while police officers were out performing other duties.

Another police officer arrived at the scene and subdued the suspect whose occupation is unknown. Police said the man has been speaking incomprehensibly since his arrest.

Not sure why everyone jumps to this conclusion. Have you ever been to a mental hospital? Some patients are far beyond incomprehensible...I guess blaming without cause is a very Japanese way of prosecuting though.

Mental health issues yet again. The guy was probably rightly arrested, but did he receive any mental health care? Was a psychiatrist called? or was he just thrown in a cell and interrogated for hours on end and left to 'speak incomprehensively'?

I would probably believe this one before the drug thing! Stay frosty people.

a 62-year-old woman who works as a koban (police box) consultant,

Police box consultant? I've never seen or heard of this. Is this a new job? Is she a retired police officer / police department employee?

Not a bad idea to have someone man the box while the police are on patrol, but surely the HR costs would be high. When I've dropped by unmanned koban before, the had a direct line phone to the police station - but admittedly I haven't visited an empty one in many years.

Always unsettling when your realize the mentally unstable are aping one another. Where I come from this would be suicide by cop. Here, I just don't know. A plea for help and attention, a desire to go to prison. I guess it's better that they're going to koban and not softer targets.

Bungle

The woman should be thankful that the sword wasn't made of steel.

Yes, it was lucky it wasn't a real Japanese sword. At any rate, these days koban attack cases have been making the headlines. Something has to be done ASAP.

Performing their duties should be like this:

the woman was alone in the police box while police officers were out "performing other duties"!?.
