Too much stress, and hope someone from the nursing home would take care of his mother.

Odds are they didnt have enough money to put her into a nursing home. Which is the case for far too many elderly here. The waiting lines are huge, particularly if you dont have money.

This won the medal of horror and award of shame.

Japan should really stop this 'take care of the elderly at home' stuff and build a few more retirement homes. Imagine being 70 years old and needing to constantly wake up in the middle of the night to help someone use a toilet. I couldn't. I don't think he responded appropriately... but I do think anyone could snap from this lifestyle.

Psychological breakdown. People can only take so much before they eventually crack. Unfortunately for the mother... it was the last straw.

I can understand this man’s stress. His mother speaking loudly because she’s hard of hearing, so maybe like this for years, incontinent, and this isn’t dealing with a child poo or pee. He’s probably strep, depressed, alone, dry little support. He thought he’d retire but now has a 24/7 job, with no work mates and no pay. He’s basically a single parent, on his own with a 100 year old child to take care of. Clearly this is a symptom that they need some help/support.

he’s not an idiot. Every parent has shouted and screamed at their child, tapped a hand, flicked or tapped a bottom. How quick, naive, and arrogant to judge. I wonder, who are the real idiots?

atleast he acknowledged his anger, his mistake and called for help. Elder abuse is always hidden and never really spoken about in the press because we’d rather focus on the kids, buts it’s there non of the less.

hopefully he will get the help he needs.

Well, what a good boy............

Happy Birthday mom! You're a 100 years old today!

You lived during the depression and World War 2!

What shall we do today?

I just want to go to the bathroom.......

WHAT?!?!?!? (BOOM!!!!!!)

Yeah, thanks junior.

This is NoT “I just want to go to the bathroom” nobody lashes out because “I just wanna go to the bathroom” absolutely nobody! Ever! Stress, worry, tiredness, depression, lack of support, lack of friends. Millions of carers, after retirement, loose contact with a social network everyone takes for granted, until you give up your job. Friends drift away, money become less, and yet we still want them to work, but this time it’s 24/7. Even a working parent can take their kids to day care, probably for free or atleast subsidized. They have their friends to talk to and let of steam, to reset, for another day, another night. Home carers get very very little, because their is no profit in it, no job to be created, no tax payer, no worker to support. It’s one reason why immigration will increase, so tax revenues can increase, (hopefully to support carers) immigrant workers can come and help, not just in the care area but in all areas.

Shogun, my guess is your young, healthy, and working, and if it’s hard to take care of kids in your thirties try looking after a big kid, in your 60s and 70s, with no job, no extra money, no support and maybe your own health is slowing.

How long has he been bottling this up ??

Horrific. I am not excusing this man’s behaviour but caring for someone long term is difficult and both carers and those they care for need support. Vulnerable people are being thrown to the wolves. There is zero support in Japan, I know this from our experiences caring for my MIL. Working full time and properly caring for an elderly, sick person is impossible. City did an assessment and said she was not eligible for help. There were times when she didn’t get the care she needed, and we never got any sleep.

As with any societal issue, let's just look the other way. Better still, go shopping and buy some happiness!

There are two victims here - replicated nationwide - while public servants feather comfortable nests.

Japan and many other countries are broke. But they all find the money to build weapons of war.

We the public should demand that politicians spend a rotating shift at the front lines of any conflict until said conflict is resolved. Maybe then we'll have no wars and no need for weapons of war. All that money saved can be used to treat the elderly in a manner they deserve for all their lifelong contributions.

(Thump thump....wake up Paddy! You dozed off again.)

It's gotta be terribly hard taking care of elderly family (or not family). I wonder if in prison he'll think it's paradise by comparison, especially if he is constantly punched in the head until unconscious, which I hope happens. Lock him up for attempted murder. Give him a good 10 years to ponder which is better.

Completely true and this happens to LOT in many countries..

In the UK on your hundredth birthday you receive a message from the King, apparently in Japan you get punched unconscious! (Originally wrote Queen, just can’t get used to it after a lifetime).

Undoubtedly highlights a growing if under reported problem inherent with an ageing population. There is no single simple solution, it needs a range of resources to be available to support the ageing population and their carers. Some may be able to cope with a little help to stay in their own homes, others need more support and some 24h medical care which may or may not be supplied by relatives and if so the carers then need support.

It sounds like the social care network has been neglected in Japan and is in need of extensive overhaul and investment.

I had to read this headline twice, so hard to believe it.

If she dies from this assault, presumably he'll be charged with murder, possibly making this a record here in Japan for the murder of a defenceless 100-year old woman.

What a hero this pathetic aggressive waste-of-space is.

Rodney, you would have let your own mother lay in urine on her 100th birthday, rather than help her or even better ask the ward office to help care for her. You are playing down violence by saying 'resorting' to it. She was as helpless as a child.

it may come as a complete shock to you but hospitals have a toilet round. Then patient wears an incontinence pad, and I’m sure his Mather had in incontinent pad or a incontinent bed pad. These toilet rounds are done ever two hours. Now, how often do you think you could continue to do this 24/7 ever night?

not very long.

Rodney is absolutely right. How many babies sleep all through the night, in a wet nappy? Then in the morning, after a good nights sleep mum or dad, change the nappy? Answer is, every single one, even your own parents did it. If that scares you, then your probably could never be a carer. But like most immigrants in Japan, they won’t have to look after THEIR parents as they’ve abdicated that responsibility to the family back home.

Happy Birthday, Kaasan! What can one say other than what kurisupisu said above while feeling a great and deep sadness for Humanity... but, of course, money for killing machines outweighs any consideration for the care of those who have carried society and its Ruling parasites on their backs in the past.

Stress dealing with the elderly by the elderly?

It will only get worse in Japan where the system is being continually overloaded…"

-3 ( +13 / -16 )

Japan should really stop this 'take care of the elderly at home' stuff and build a few more retirement homes.

While that might reduce incidents of family members abusing their own, that’d only lead to a corresponding upsurge in ‘out of mind, out of sight’ outsourced abuse from frustrated caregivers in it only for the ¥.

For decades Japan has done very little to engineer more humane systems for dealing with the consequences of an aging society. In consequence of this MIA benign neglect, we’re increasingly seeing overwhelmed and under resourced family members conscripted by the state to serve as its surrogate, drained of their last scintilla of compassion and generating headlines like this on an almost daily basis.

Maybe she forgot who he was. So he tried to remind her. What an a hole

Compared to the PRISON he's been in, maybe for decades, jail may be a personal 'freedom'... and what happens to a recovering 100 year old Okaasan thrust into a sea of strangers and strange places? And does living to such an advanced state of decay and dependence seem like a positive thing to YOU? It is, IMHO, extremely selfish...

What the hell?

For how long has this man been living with and looking after his mother? This is only one instance of his cruelty to his mother who bore him and looked after him growing up. His mother should now be taken away from him to live in a nursing home where she can be looked after with kindness. He should be in prison.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Hard to believe that he would do this after all these years.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

There is an old adage and it goes like this ' Dont bite the hand that feeds you '. It should be updated in Japan to ' Dont shout at person whose hand wipes your bottom '. ( especially when your very old and can't do it yourself ). Kuso ba-ba !

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

I have experienced his stress. He is an idiot. I would rather just let her wet her bed than resort to violence. Sort it out in the morning…
