Man arrested for punching taxi driver after failing to pay fare

A 35-year-old man has been arrested for assaulting a taxi driver in Tokyo and failing to pay his taxi fare.

The man, who has been named as Katsuhiro Ochi, allegedly asked the taxi driver to take him from Ginza to Mitaka at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, TV Asahi reported.

According to police, upon arriving in Mitaka, Ochi told the driver he did not have enough money to pay the 9,000 yen fare and requested he drive to a convenience store to find an ATM. Ochi then allegedly punched the driver and fled the scene without paying the fare.

During police questioning, Ochi denied the charges, telling investigators he had no memory of the incident.

LOL classic!

...he had no memory of the incident.

In other words, he lacks the imagination to come up with a reasonable scenario so he denies he was even there despite the fact that the taxi driver most likely had a video of him.

Yet another nutter in my neighborhood of Mitaka reported in japan today.

You'd think the Ghibli Museum would bring peace and love to Mitaka...

@OrangeXenon54

I live in Mitaka and taxi drivers here are beyond insane

He was a Tokyo taxi driver...

Show me the money (first). I'm also curious as to how the flops got this guy.

@OrangeXenon54 Pretty much all taxis in Tokyo have video cameras in them, there are cameras in the streets, guy lives in Mitaka, came from Ginza, etc. - Probably wouldn't be that difficult to catch the guy..

That's absolutely terrible. I'm curious, too, how he was caught. That's a long long way to drive to come out with nothing.

And while I don't condone the actions of the man, I'm gonna play devil's advocate for a sec to those talking about taxi drivers. I live in Mitaka and taxi drivers here are beyond insane, barely stopping at intersections and almost hitting pedestrians. This is a residential area so there are always people walking home via side-streets, but taxi drivers seem to ignore this fact and speed as fast as possible in a reckless manner.

Poor taxi driver, have to put up with this nonsence.

Classy, I don't remember anything is the best excuse in this country!

How did they catch him? Did he flee to a koban and slap the cuffs on himself?

Yet another nutter in my neighborhood of Mitaka reported in japan today. First it was the horrific stabbing in Kichijoji, the next station over, and now this drunken idiot. At least I know now how much it costs by taxi from Ginza to Mitaka.

Coward. These taxi drivers are usually old men unable to defend themselves.

I'm astounded by the number of cases of "lost memory" in Japan ! Is it something in the drinking water ? (More likely in the saké...)

4 ( +6 / -1 )

no memory of the incident

No no no!! He must have forgotten the part about being drunk. How else is this going to hold up in court?!
