Police in Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of robbery after he stole cash from a jewelry store.
Police said Kazuaki Tabe, a company employee, who was arrested Tuesday, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying, “I was having trouble repaying my debts and thought that a precious metals and jewelry shop would have cash.”
Police said the robbery occurred around 2:25 p.m. on October 3 at a branch of Otakaraya precious metal and jewelry consignment store. Tabe committed the robbery while on his way to work. He pointed a knife at the 63-year-old male store manager and demanded he hand over cash.
The employee, who was not hurt, gave Tabe about 150,000 yen in cash stored in the office.
Police said Tabe emerged as a suspect after security camera footage showed him entering and exiting the store at the time of the robbery and also because he transferred 150,000 yen to his bank account after the robbery.

Lots of careers involve shift work. Hospitals, anything in transportation and warehousing, hospitality, etc.

Funny I had mate in the force who said they used to classify someone who used gloves whilst committing a robbery as a professional…. Doesn’t say much for how stupid most of the crims are does it. This joker seems to fit the non professional description pretty well…

It is worrying that a jewelry store (that is supposedly a business with strong security) could be robbed so easily even by a criminal so inept and unprepared. If the criminal were able to plan the crime with actual capacity it could have gotten away with it.

They'd probably spend more for security than what they gave this chump. And they still caught him with the cameras, anyway.

This is so sad. Only 24 years old and this guy has ruined his life for ¥150,000.

Its called be a modern day criminal at work! They call criminal activity putting in work even though he took what he thought was a break to rob another business.

The difference between Japan and elsewhere, is that he was probably very Polite, and asked nicely for the Money... so be careful how you speak in Japanese.... you could end up being misinterpreted.

He made a mistake. Young people are under a lot of pressure these days because employers pay them peanuts and the government takes a lot off them in taxes and health insurance bills, however that is no excuse for what he did. He'll learn from it and move on from it. Much higher profile people have done much worse things, bribing people for instance, so we shouldn't be too hard on him.
