Man arrested for ruining fruit at supermarket

Police in Koryo, Nara Prefecture, have arrested a 71-year-old man on suspicion of property destruction after he ruined several pieces of fruit at a supermarket.

According to police, the man used his finger to poke holes in kiwifruit, bananas and other items such as peppers, at the supermarket at around 6:25 p.m. on May 10, Sankei Shimbun reported. In all, he ruined 16 pieces of fruit, worth about 4,145 yen, the supermarket said.

Police said the man, who was arrested on Monday, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he did it to ease his stress and anxiety. Police said the man told them he had done the same thing about 30 times since April. Police identified him after examining store surveillance camera footage.

Man arrested for ruining fruit at supermarket

This is what crime is around here... poking fruit at a supermarket!

How good would be if the rest of the world was safe like this.

Unfortunately as soon as you leave Japan you need to hide your wallet otherwise consider it gone.

The only good part is that they might let you keep your fruit if you are carrying some lol.

The surprising thing is that he got away doing it over 30 times, probably this time he was confident he would not be caught no matter how much he did and finally did enough damage to be reported to the police.

Somebody get this child a roll of bubble wrap and a box of crayons!

How do you poke holes in bananas?

You’d actually have to pierce it with your nails or deliberately dig into it.

Even if it were super soft, you wouldn’t be poking holes, you’d be just flattening them.

This joker was on a mission.

After he poked the pilot holes with his finger I suppose its fortunate he didnt poke the holes again with something else...

Guy better watch his back in the hoosgow. They don't take too kindly to fruit-ruiners I hear.

?

Here in the US he'd probably just get escorted out of the store and banned from coming back.

But sir, there's no shame in bubble wrap. Or stress balls. Or in autumn, walk through some crunchy leaves.

I wonder what on earth goes on in the Japanese police station away from the prying eyes of a defence lawyer or video camera that makes suspects so quickly admit to previous offences.....

expat - hah! Guess they forgot the decimal point.

He is mental, but what is society to do? Locking him up for this stupid behaviour is overkill.

"worth about 4,145 yen" About?

You have to multipy that with 30, according to him

A new form of stress reduction?

Torturing vegetables!

That’s the usual pattern of quite aged seniors who just only want to be caught, because pension is low, living costs high , daily life and corona restrictions difficult and exhausting, and now , if really put in prison , they are totally happy with a newly structured day, free clothes and food supplied and some little work , talking with other inmates instead loneliness, some pocket money for what they wished for long, be it a manga or a delicious chocolate bar, something small they can’t afford outside, etc , all that details makes them finally feel relieved like nothing else outside prison walls, because society could never offer them anything in all those decades.

I can understand him savaging kiwi fruit, but a banana???? Bananas are perfectly harmless.

I can understand him savaging kiwi fruit, but a banana????

Kiwifruit (commonly shortened to kiwi in North America) or Chinese gooseberry

Kiwifruit is native to central and eastern China.

A little surprised that China does not plan on reclaiming ownership of it's gooseberry by invading New Zealand. Maybe that is why Ardern is hesitant to rile China?

But seriously, why would anyone want to harm innocent fruit?

he did it to ease his stress and anxiety???

Dude, get a hobby. Or go watch some AVs.

Sheesh! what a fruitcake!

Oops! Sorry!

Only in Japan could 16 pieces of fruit set you back 4,145 yen.

More likely the SWAT team would be called out and he'd be dead.

Poking holes in fruit is what a 7 yo does, not a 71 yo.

I hope the Police spared no expense at running down this obviously dangerous master criminal.......

He's 71 years old and doing these rotten shenanigans? Didn't his mommy tell him not to do that stunt when he was 7? Damn.
