Police in Tokyo have arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of attempting to kill his 75-year-old mother-in-law at their residence in Shinagawa Ward.
According to police, they received a call at around 1:25 p.m. on Tuesday from a woman claiming that she was “pushed down and stabbed,” Kyodo News reported.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a woman collapsed at the entrance, bleeding from a stab wound to her stomach. The woman, Mieko Kato, was rushed to hospital unconscious and remains in a critical condition, police said.
The victim’s son-in-law, Toshio Yozaki, a company employee, was at home and there was a blood-stained knife on the floor. Police said Yozaki has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying, “We got into an argument, and I stabbed her after becoming frustrated.”
Kato lives with her daughter, son-in-law and her grandchild. Her daughter and grandchild were not home at the time of the stabbing.

The majority of murders in Japan are likely now of an intrafamily nature. That's my assumption, anyway, considering that Japan has something like 1.5 murders a day and we see one of these stories nearly everyday.
A good idea for a JT story might be to dig up the actual figures and report on this in a bit of depth. Might get picked up in the international press and bring in some syndication dollars!

Hope the victim recovers and was perhaps good the wife & child weren’t home or, it could possibly have been a much worse story. In this case, the guy had a job so, why be home on a Tues early afternoon with the mother in law?

Yes, daily intra-family violence @CaptDingleheimer 9:03am, many recent cases of middle-aged or younger arguing with and attacking the elderly. But Japan’s got to present the best face for the world stage so, the NPA and Ministry of Justice never seem to publish such specific statistics.
The closest you’ll find are some periodic news releases or independent research:

How can you stab your family member. I’ve seen stabbing and suicides before. There is blood everywhere. All over walls, street corners, it is terrible. I hope he can never look at anything red for the rest of his life.
