Ah, Japan in summer, this earthly nirvana!! High humidity, mold growing out of the tatami, knife-wielding loonies and dog-kicking nutjobs. Is this paradise or what?

What would this country be without sexually-depressed junior highschool students hijacking buses, small children dropping like flies in motor vehicles parked outside pachiko palors, or hundreds of people drowning in preventable water accidents?

I think it's about time the government set up a "snitch site" for Japanese to snitch on Japanese, like they do for Japanese snitching on foreigners.

I've never felt apprehension walking by another foreigner here in Japan, but have countless times felt a bit sketched-out by some the J-dude/nutters I've passed by or have had walking behind me.

Less effort on "controlling" foreign crime and stronger effort at curtailing J-crime. And publicize it as such! Almost everyone I know here has this distorted image that so much of the crimes are committed by non-Japanese.

I see on average about 5 nutters each day walking around the city, mumbling to themselves, twitching and walking hyperactively. Most people just ignore them, while I keep my eye on them in case they pull a knife or something.

Lots of misunderstanding society. These crimes occur all over the place. They just don't make the national news like they do on JT. If the JT crime section is your window into Japan, then your view is likely to be majorly skewed.

As for "nutters," there's a lot of mentally challenged people walking around, yes, but having worked in an institution for mentally challenged people in Japan, I can certify that most of these people have beautiful hearts.

However, there are a few that don't understand the difference between right and wrong, nor do they understand consequences. They are likely to repeat things they have seen. This could have been what happened in this news article. So, don't let your guard down, but at the same time please stop these over the top "Japan is hell on earth boo boo boo" rants.

moonbeams, I think the first step to solve a problem is by admitting there is a problem, not by being in denial.

In essence Moonbean is right most mentally unbalanced people are not a danger to anybody except perhaps themselves & it really is out of order to class them all as being the same. Equally it is just as wrong to use today’s news as an excuse for having a dig at Japan. Japan is little different than most other countries when it comes to looking after the mentally ill members of their population. That does not however say that I need take up the slack & take any kind of risk. If they behave like crazies I avoid them because of the potential dangers, if this makes me a bad person then I will live with that. This father & daughter attacked today will live, but they will never regain the confidence they had before the attack. I hope they recover as much as they can.

Another one!?!? How many random stabbings have there been this year? Two or three a month? I am seriously concerned for the welfare of my kids. This place is going to the dogs (freaks)!

There were three freak incidents yesterday. How many today?

Bottom line, Japan is filled with people who are enraged at their marginalized, repetitive and hopeless worker drone routines. They are angry thanks to the ill mannered treatment we have all seen conducted against employees at companies here. They are working massive hours, having issues at home, finances are difficult, social lives non-existent and very few pay offs other than technical distractions and places to drink. And even those are often unfriendly and cold.

Is it any wonder people are breaking down under this? I think the worst is yet to come.

Its good that the person Yoshikatsu Terajima was found and arrested. Otherwise I would feel quite uncomfortable with my family.

Beautiful hearts or not, I don't think what you'r referring to as mentally challenged is the same as what posters are talking about, that being people having psychological problems. I also don't think that anyone here is worried about a sweet young man with Down's Syndrome stabbing them for no reason. People are talking about people who've gone off the rails and are not getting help getting back on track. I'm sensitive to what you're saying but I too watch my back when I'm near someone who looks slightly unhinged or wound too tightly and I don't see how you figure that to be in the least bit racist. I'm in Japan so the vast majority of people I see who fit either category are Japanese. If I were in Germany they'd be Germans and if I were in Columbia they'd be Columbians and so on. There's no need to be so reactionary when people are simply expressing concerns about violent crime.

Yes society is getting worse. Nothing wrong with a person saying that - Japanese everywhere are saying exactly the same thing!! Watch Japanese TV programs and talk with normal Japanese, and you will realize that the people worried about this increase in crime are not just gaijin. In fact, the only people I ever hear saying that things are not getting worse are a few gaijin on this site. Which is kind of funny isn't it?

There's a big difference between an increase in the incidence of a crime and an increase in the media's reporting of a crime. So unless you have access to objectively compiled stats on incidences of crimes in Japan which support your ideas, this type of thing isn't increasing, and it isn't getting ridiculous. JT (and most other news sites) is just appealing to its readership's sense of fear so as to increase advertising returns.

by the way, there have been a lot more than 2 or 3 a month. you should check other news sources

I can't say if things are getting worse or not because I was not there in the past.

I think Japan is a very safe society.

In today's world, news spreads faster which results in an increase of bad news.

Having said that tkoind2 made a great list of problems unique to this society that can cause people to crack. These problems need to be addressed.

From my point of view, and why I think Japan is a safe society, given all of these problems, people are not cracking right and left. This surprises me and is a good thing.

A huge problem facing the future of this society is the undisciplined youth.

This is not to be pooh-poohed. as a random act. Its obviously a related copy-cat style of crime, and just beware my friends. Beware and be aware. And Good ruck.

Dang, everyday crimes like these! Ibaraki, Aichi, Osaka, Tokyo...and my boyfriend just said the main headline tonight in Shiga prefecture was a car was run over. :(
