Police in Chiba have arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of stabbing a junior high school girl in her thigh with an empty syringe.

According to the police, Toshiaki Ito is accused of stabbing the girl in her right thigh as they were passing each other on a library stairway in Chuo Ward at around 4 p.m. on Sept 27, leaving her with minor injury, Fuji TV reported.

Based on the girl's description of the man who stabbed her, a police officer in plain clothes on Friday detained Ito in the area. Ito, who had a syringe in his bag, has denied the charge.

Police also said there have been reports of sightings of a man with a syringe since August.
