According to police, the incident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Fuji TV reported that the man, wearing an orange shirt, was loitering near the west entrance of the station when he suddenly stabbed the woman in the back. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for serious injuries which will require two months to heal, doctors said.

Getting cold, prolly wanted 3 hots and a cot for the winter. Why did he pick an old woman? Because he's a coward and didn't want to get his @ss kicked attacking some burly MMA type.

if he simply wants 3 hots and a cot then can't he simply just commit a minor crime such as shoplifting and leave people alone?

Poor lady. What a low life and coward this man is. Some tips for anyone seeking to go to jail.

Go to an expensive Ginza jewelry store

Try your luck by breaking open a display-case and grab that million dollar diamond.

RUN!

If you make it your money woes are gone for a while. If you get caught your money woes are gone for a while.

Most importantly you didn't inflict physical pain and suffering on a random weak target.

Probably wants to die but can't quite bring himself to do the deed, so he's trying suicide by capital punishment. Shockingly common reason given here for random attacks.

This happens way too often in Japan. Yeah, Japan May very well have a lower violent crime rate than other countries, but this “I just wanted to kill someone” theme is quite unique to Japan. In other countries you’ll get robbed or beaten up by a thug, but in Japan, if you are unable to fight back you are a prime target for one of these cowardly lunatics. Japan is nowhere near as safe as it is touted to be, especially if you are a woman, child or elderly. And, let’s not forget about how many family murders occur in Japan. I hope this woman makes a full recover. What kind of coward stabs a 73 year old woman in the back just so he can go to jail? It’s absoluteky disgusting!

the man, wearing an orange shirt,

That's the problem, right there.

I'm a Dutch native and I take offense at this comment. Orange is a beautiful color.

In all seriousness. Japan needs to update its mental care here, also need to find a solution to stop these useless crimes that make people just want go to jail for a free bed and 3 meals.

What a cowardly POS! He was hanging around the station looking for the easiest target. As a middle-aged man I have no fear living in Tokyo. However, those who are not middle-aged men should remain cautious and vigilent. The creeps are out there!

Brilliant thinking...

Am I thinking too much if I suspected there is something wrong with the welfare system or the lack there of when people want to go to jail?

Yes Tim; probably...or they don't want to go to a city office and apply, because

it's embarrassing....better to go STAB someone....guess he considers that "Work".

“I thought if I killed someone, the police would come and arrest me.”

You thought correctly, IDIOT

Why don't Japan make their prisoners work a job like they do in the mid-west american movies? Abe is talking about labor shortages so making prisoners work makes sense. Many roads needs fixing and ditches need to be dug.

Plus why do they deserve our tax money for food and a cell for committing a crime?

He was quoted as saying, “I thought if I killed someone, the police would come and arrest me.”

I think that's the way it usually goes. You didn't have to cause bodily injury to an innocent victim.

A free bed and 3 squares a day sounds good right about now.  Where's my orange T-shirt!!?

And BTW... Japan needs to update a hell of a lot more than just its mental care system...
