For anyone who then says " how can seats cost that much!?": These are genuine leather deluxe-type seats. The are not the regular skinny sort but extra-cushion type with brass rivets, etc. The perpetrator, according to TV news, also admitted he had a leather fetish and would not steal vinyl seats.

I agree. Let's look at the profile, 35 and probably living alone. I noticed that they didn't normally call him a "company man" so I assume that he is probably without a job or lowly skiled. I imagine he's a social recluse and if they searched his computer, they would find a trove of perverted information. Leather saddles can cost as much as 30,000 yen. I have a Brooks saddle which I paid 10,000 yen, When I park my bike at a shop, I cover with a plastic saddle cover because I don't want to get it stolen. Sitting on a nice leather saddle is so much more comfortable than a vinyl saddle.

I imagine the price is the estimated cost of replacement, ie new, which is what the owner must do if they want to ride their bike. My bike seat is a Selle, and is 7 or 8,000 Y new. Mid-range bike seats are 4-5,000, and specialty ones go up to 10, or 15, or even 20,000Y. So, no adding value for being women's.
