Man arrested for stealing 3,000 onion seedlings

Police in Nakai, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 67-year-old man on suspicion of stealing approximately 3,000 onion seedlings that were planted in a field.

According to police, Yoshinobu Kojima, who was arrested on Thursday, is accused of stealing the seedlings (worth about 15,000 yen) from a field in Odawara City between 4:30 p.m. on Dec 7 and 8 a.m. the following morning, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Eyewitness accounts and security camera footage installed near the field confirmed Kojima was the onion-stealing culprit, police said.

Approximately three tons of onions can be harvested from 3,000 onion seedlings, growers say.

Police said farmers in the area have reported about 10,000 stolen onion seedlings since the start of December, and they are questioning Kojima about his involvement in those cases.

@Ganbare Japan! - When onion theft is number one Crime News in Japan, you know it is a safe country!

Actually, no it doesn't. Fruit and vegetable theft from farms, orchids and storage sheds is a very common crime in Japan. It shows just how desperate people are under Abe's failed economic reform.

I grow onions each year and 1 seedling basically means one onion.

So each onion is 1kg?

Onion seedlings are worthless unless planted and it took some effort to pull them from the ground. For the price of about 5yen a seedling, it was a lot of extra work. Not a very smart onion...

Actually onion seedlings have been rather hard to come by this planting season. I ordered mine in advance from my local garden centre, planted them and the typhoon rains literally washed half of them away and pummelled the other half into the mud. All the other local veggie growers were in the same boat, so almost immediately garden centres /plant shops for miles around had a run on onion seedlings and were out of stock until the suppliers had time to plant and grow new seeds.

Like the mans work ethic. He picked ‭193.5483870967742‬ onion seedlings per hour. Did he take lunch break?
