Man arrested for stealing garbage truck

Police in Tokyo said Saturday they have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of stealing a garbage truck in July.

According to police, Shunsuke Honma has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he was drunk and couldn’t be bothered to go home on a crowded subway train, Fuji TV reported. He also said he didn’t have enough money for a taxi.

Police said the incident occurred just before 8 a.m. on the morning of July 28 in Roppongi, Minato Ward. Honma, who lives in Edogawa Ward and works in a Roppongi bar, told police he was drinking up until around 6 a.m.

Rather than try to get on the subway during rush hour, he spotted a parked garbage truck. The driver was behind the truck as garbage was being loaded. Honma got in and drove for about three kilometers to JR Shimbashi Station where he abandoned the truck.

Before he stole the truck, Honma was seen on street surveillance camera footage trying to open the doors of cars in a parking lot. He also asked the driver of another garbage truck if he could give him a lift as far as Kachidoki in Chuo Ward.

Police said Honma, who does not have a driver’s license, was charged with violation of the Road Traffic Law.

I knew just from reading the headline that alcohol was involved.

And now imagine a terrorist reading this and getting a hint how simple this is. I can only hope the secret service is working double shift to prevent all of possible terrorism.

Singular? Road Traffic Law? Misprint? That's all? How about felony grand thief auto of a government vehicle, driving without a license, driving while intoxicated, endangerment of public safety, just to name a few. I'm sure there is more.

give him a drivers licence! if he can drive a garbage truck he can definitely drive a car better than the drivers i see. 3 months in the clink will cure his alcoholism.

Have to say that a lot of drivers leave their engines running whilst doing other things-it's an invitation isn't it?

An invitation to enjoy living in a country that feels secure and safe enough not to have to worry so much about having their vehicle stolen.

Keep in mind that this is an aberration and blaming the victim does not help.

I don't mind leaving their engines running and cars unlocked just don't stop at sides of the road just prior/after an intersection as they like to do outside a local combini and bakery.
