Man arrested for sticking chopsticks in daughter’s ear

Police in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, have arrested a 51-year-old public servant on suspicion of injuring his daughter by sticking chopsticks into her ear.

According to police, Akihiko Ikeda, a deputy director at the Yamagata Prefectural Government’s Murayama branch, stuck a pair of chopsticks into his 9-year-old daughter’s right ear on Dec 6 at their house in Sendai’s Aoba ward, Fuji TV reported. The daughter suffered an abrasion to her ear.

Ikeda’s wife contacted police on Dec 21.

The daughter had been temporarily placed in the custody of the local children's welfare facility.

Ikeda was quoted by police as saying he wanted to discipline his daughter.

Police believe that Ikeda may have been abusing his family on a regular basis.

The old chopsticks in the ear punishment. Is there such a thing? What the hell was he thinking? (or obviously not thinking clearly).

Right, this is very topical of Japanese ways. "Do not ever make a mistake." Mistake is a shame and discipline is prevention. Therefore, the Japanese do not know how to improve or how to forgive someone for a mistake or the mistakes. Mistake (learning) is our human DNA. But in Japan mistake has no place so they do not learn...

Don't get me wrong, what he did was inexcusable, but we hear about HORRENDOUS abuse at the hands of parents with Child Welfare doing nothing about it until the kids end up dead, and yet here we have a child taken away for an ear abrasion.

You ever puncture your eardrum? Accidentally, I have with a cotton swab. It is the only time in my life I've ever literally rolled on the floor howling in pain. Don't be making light of ear injuries until you've experienced them yourself. For a parent to intentionally injure a child's ear as "discipline" is just as heinous as other forms of abuse.

If he wanted to discipline her he should have paddled her butt... Just a thought.

It was domestic violence.

Dang! What a stupid thing to do to a child! Where do they find these people? Geez! He'll likely get a light punishment because it was violence within his family.

Yes mom waited a long time to report. One wonders what kind of abuse she suffers in that marriage? Another male who should go straight to jail and stay there for 30 years.

Yes. After first hand experience, I can vouch that (as smithinjapan writes) "including possible beating of her as well", which could explain the delay in "reporting"...

What a vile character this male...

Oh lord, these are the people we entrust our information, pensions, health insurance, social services, etc.

Mom waited a bit long I think. Look at the dates.

What a complete (insert expletive of your choice)! This has to be one of the meanest and disgusting acts of child abuse I've heard of in recent 'days'. When will these fools learn that, discipline is not abuse!

now is time for the law to discipline him. hope he get heavy penalty.

Remember, arrested doesn't mean punished or even charged.

As for this guy, it sounds indeed like he was a regular abuser, otherwise I can't see such a huge fuss about what he did (unless there is something we are missing, like he punctured the ear drum or pierced the ears). Don't get me wrong, what he did was inexcusable, but we hear about HORRENDOUS abuse at the hands of parents with Child Welfare doing nothing about it until the kids end up dead, and yet here we have a child taken away for an ear abrasion. Hence, I think this was not the first time his behaviour has been reported, or else when it was reported the mother (and thank god she spoke up!) gave information about more incidents (including possible beating of her as well).

His reasoning was, he wanted to discipline his daughter by sticking chopsticks in her ear? Wow! I hope they throw the book at this guy and never enable him to get the chance to hurt his family again.

Yeah, Yubaru, you are right. I originally wrote "51. And a public servant" to kind of add expected maturity to a role that is expected to be responsible but somehow the 51 got lost.

Only a true moron would do such an act.....

Ikeda was quoted by police as saying he wanted to discipline his daughter.

Ahh, the calibre of those to whom entrust so much of our lives.

And a public servant. It's hard to fathom.

Why? Just because they are smart enough to pass some test to get their jobs doesnt make them immune from being stupid.

And a public servant. It's hard to fathom.

Violence is a crime and they think violence can discipline anyone, really?
