Kanagawa Prefectural Police have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of assault after he threw sand into a woman’s face at the beach.
Police said Ren Miyanishi, who works as a firefighter in Chiba Prefecture, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying, “I threw sand at her because she didn’t want to have anything to do with me."
The incident occurred at around 1:40 p.m. on Sunday at Yuigahama Beach in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Sankei Shimbun reported. The woman, who is in her 20s, was asleep on the beach when Miyanishi threw sand on her face.
Miyanishi had come to the beach with five or six colleagues while the woman came with a separate group. At one point, Miyanishi approached the woman and asked her to go somewhere with him but she refused.
One of the woman’s friends called police to complain about a man making a nuisance of himself.

Japanese men like this are an embarrassment. Read the news. She made the right choice.
I get the impression from reading this story that most Japanese men really cannot handle rejection. Especially as he was supposedly in a disciplined profession.
Stalkings, murder suicides, read the news. They cannot man up to rejection.

Just another man child.

Another fireman! What's their problem with females? He should be ashamed of himself. Assault seems a bit much but definatly a sit down with someone to explain to this excuse for a man that adults don't behave this way. Really throwing sand because you are angry, reminds me of chest stretching advertising in comic books 40 years ago...pathetic.

What a great story! Finally, a story with a happy ending. Im happy to know that there are women in Japan who reject these baby boys. I give her two thumbs up for knowing who not to hang with. Good for you girl! However the headline should read: A baby boy arrested....
shogun36
Hmm, there's a pattern. These firemen keep ending up in harassment news on here.
Is there a reason for this? Are they tired of playing with their hoses all day?
Sounds like a big man throwing sand in the face of a woman who was minding her own business.
Where do these guys learn their game anyway? No wonder the population is in such trouble in Japan.
Brian Wheway
What a prize idiot! throwing sand into someones face is not a good chat up line. Try buying her an ice cream or a soft drink, that is a better option.
Aly Rustom
Well! I'll bet she friggin loves you now! Pfft

Well, throwing a hissy fit ain't going to make things better. Another funny crime news report, thanks JT!
memoryfix
Don’t go too hard on the guy without the story. Maybe he had been rejected a lot recently and this was the last straw. Also, maybe she rejected him in a way that made him feel small.

I approached three women on the beach yesterday and told them where they could get some good selfies of the water and sunset and they appreciated the information.
I dug out quickly because I thought they'd enjoy the view to themselves more than with me hanging around.
Throw sand on someone? Nah, not my style.
Fighto!
Absolute scum and a loser. It scares me to think that this sociopath is a firefighter. Hope he loses his job.

Another frustrated Japanese man child. Pathetic

What's a selfie of the water and sunset? Were the girls made of water and light?
You need more self confidence.

memoryfix, the gentlemans art of chatting to ladies is to learn how to crash and burn gracefully. I have turned crashing and burning into an art form...

I get it. Dating is tough as a guy. That’s how it is though. You take it on the chin and move on.
If the guy isreally sick of it, then take the MGTOW route my dude.

@Bugle Boy of Company B
They are there to take selfies. Got it? Good.
They want the sunset and beach and ocean in the shot too. Naturally.
They never know the best spot and frankly I get bored after watching so many ocean going sunset viewing beach questers settle for a mediocre image.
Nah, I'll pass on the more confidence thing.
GW
This guy is a real putz!
kohakuebisu
Selfies and sunset don't match. You'll be in silhouette or will blow out the sky in the background. You need a fill flash that's off camera for anything worth keeping.
It sounds like there is a lot of machismo in Japanese fire brigades. The semi-volunteer one in my town has forced drinking parties, notorious bullying, and yearly trips that always go somewhere with a red light district.

one day these "baby boys" is going to mess with the wrong lady, i.e. who has a yak brother...

What did I just read..
Never justification for acts of this nature. I recall being taught, if someone rejects you, you move on until you find "the one". It's worked out pretty well so far.
Also noted..your sympathy is one sided here. Girl in this case could have used a little sympathy as well.
quercetum
These types probably got whatever they wanted growing up and can’t handle rejection. His mother never said no.
A girl in her 20’s in a bikini at the beach calls for help will draw that kind of response. They were very thorough in checking out the facts.

Did he throw sand on her while she was sleeping or after talking with her? The information is central to understanding the event but the writer cannot seem to make up her mind.
James
Well he admitted his guilt. Even though he was just shaking out his towel. It worked out as quicker course of action as he was let out on the same day.

You may have turned rejection into an art form, but how about figuring out how to read the crime section without equating it to all “Japanese people cannot handle rejection”
You do realize that your reading about the evil and the nutters

Pity she didn't go all Charles Atlas on him.
Vanessa Carlisle
Four down votes and no explanation. Thinking about it I guess that he had talked to her a while before she fell a sleep, and she rejected him. Then later after she fell asleep he threw the sand. The article is really unclear about this but it should be as usually such a reaction is not postponed.
James
What is really concerning is people don't actually know what really happened. If you understood the Japan Justice System you would realise admitting one's guilt is the quick way to end a case. he won't receive an assault charge it will be a misdemeanor as he admitted his guilt, he will be charged yen 100000 for court costs and pay 10000 to the lady, even though all he did was shake of his towel but he will still be at work on Monday on the other hand if he denied the allegation he would be held up to 23 days or longer without being able to see a lawyer and be constantly told he needed to admit his guilt or he will be held longer which would mean he would lose his job and then his accommodation.
Bugle Boy of Company B
To each his own.
Anyway, as it was pointed out, you can't take a decent selfie with the sunset unless you have a proper camera. And most people don't carry one in their pocket.

I’ve know many j firemen and a huge percentage show a lot of NPD traits which is also ingrained in the culture here.

“I threw sand at her because she didn’t want to have anything to do with me." Poor soul. He needs counselling, I am sure this wasn't the first time he was rejected...

Historical note from the annals of American pop culture through the decades: If you're old enough to remember, Charles Atlas on the back covers of American manga (well...comics, 'primitive' manga) had the solution for "200 pound sandkickers", which, apparently, were numerous enough in the U.S. to warrant serious methods to ward them off. In Atlas' case it was "Dynamic Tension" and for $1.25 you could get the 'secret' to protecting you or your 'beloved' from such poorly socialized behavior. Those were simpler days populated by simpler minded Humans who are largely responsible for the messes we see in our Human World today...[Okay, Boomer] Blame us Boomers, you're right to do so but it's almost certain YOUR grandkids will face the same insanity you are now living in having made the same mistakes and believed the same liars we did. Ganbatte! And don't throw sand in innocent people's faces because your ego has yet to keep up with your age. I wonder if one of this chap's motivations for becoming a 'firefighter' was "the women like such people". It would be a blow to discover this to be patently untrue. One's whole 'identity' would be at risk of 'education' and, for the small of mind, nothing is worse because there is usually nothing to fall back on so one's WHOLE WORLD seems to be threatened by even small wake up calls. But I'm sure this fellow is WIDE awake now... ...and the poor woman: ya work hard to be attractive and then this is the result. Somehow I think there is a lesson there as well but best not dwelled upon here...

What is the crime ?
I see teenagers' bad play.
No one to educate them ?

Throwing sand?
Into the face?
Not an endearing action...

So you think throwing sand at strangers face isn’t a crime? If the sand had entered the eyes it can lead to permanent long term problems and even blindness. Would you like some stranger to do this to you? Think before commenting!

The crime is sexual harassment and assault. She said no, and he used violence to show her what happens when you reject a man's sexual advances.
He's also 26 years old, which is nowhere near being a teenager. Besides that, we know that little boys tease girls to show them that they like them. This is a case where a man assaulted a woman who said "no" to him.
Men are afraid women will reject them. Women are afraid men will kill them.
baroque1888
This is horrible that the woman was subject to this sexual harassment/assault/stalking from this parasite. Any kind of sexual assault/harassment/stalking, it should be a minimum of sixty years in prison with no chance of parole or alternatively a firing squad. These kinds of crimes should not be encouraged, they should be discouraged thereby the criminals should suffer severe consequences.
kurisupisu
I’ve seen guys abuse women here for the simple reason that they are too weak to fight back....

Pathetic replies to my comment above.
Everything becomes a crime by now leading to police intervention, demonstrations and suing...grow up.
In the case mentioned in the article, there is no indication she was hurt and neither was he harassing (nuisance is not harassment).
I just commented the level of what is just bad childish behavior where in my country anyother adult would have stand up beside the young woman and educate the silly fireman.
By the way, some commenters apparently sleep with their eyes open on the beach asking to become blind...LOL
Some have never lived.
starpunk
He just can't take a 'no' or a blow off so then he hates her and chucks sand right into her face in a hissy fit? He reminds me of these idiots who demand a woman 'come his way' and surrender to his 'charms' and when she shrugs him off, he then goes around calling her a 'b*tch' or a 'slut'.
And he's 26 years old going on 12. What a loser!
Disturbed_Moderate
Regardless whether you think it's nuisance or harassment, no one asks to have sand intentionally flung into their faces when they're out enjoying themselves. It's unwarranted. You get sand in your eye, it hurts. You continue to bestow a childlike connotation to the action, downplaying its severity and main motive..vengeance.
When you're a kid and screw up, you get a pass. When you screw up as an adult, you get educated the hard way.
Thunderbird2
Aww diddums... did the nasty girl reject you? Well now you can sit in a corner and pout, contemplating just what an entitled manchild you are.
God, we've all been rejected... accept it and move on with your life.
PerformingMonkey
Do you really?
MilesTeg
It was sand this time. Next time when he's rejected he could throw a drink, hot coffee, a glass, a mug, a punch....I have a feeling there a lot of INCEL'S in Japan.
sourpuss
Everything in the story sounds reasonable. Her friends called the cops for nuisance behavior and the guy was arrested. Sounds good.
But then it got on social media and all of a sudden, this became the poster-boy case for sexual assault or worse:
Seriously? So now he’s now a murderer. Let’s try to keep some sense of proportion. Sand in the face is not rape or murder.
Paul
Aaaaah so sad, a 26 year old can't take a no for an answer. A mommy's little boy who must have been sucking on her teat till now because she couldn't say NO...
starpunk
He never learned that you can't always get what you want. He never learned any discipline in his life. You gotta grow up sometime and tossing sand into somebody's face is just plain immature.
He probably doesn't know how to act with women or even talk to them. Still, if she says 'no thanks' then leave her alone.
Luddite
A massive sense of entitlement. What a narcissist.

Some have never lived? I think you may want to consider the fact that you have never lived as a woman. You don't know what it is like to have a man twice as big as you are become aggressive towards you only because you told him that you were not interested in him. And this is not an isolated incident - this kind of harassment is very common. It's happened to me more times that I can count, and I have witnessed it many times as well.
Does a woman have to be physically hurt for harassment to be taken seriously? Why? Verbal harassment and small physical assaults, such as being bumped into, pushed, or having sand thrown at you, are often precursors to more serious assaults leading to injury and even death. Today he throws sand. With no consequences, and some people even some making allowances and justifications for his behavior, the next time he'll throw a punch.
Men like this are showing that they do not respect women, do not respect their autonomy, their right to say no, or respect boundaries, personal and physical. That means they are a danger to women - she was 100% right to call the police, because for all she knew he might come back again - with a knife, a bat, who knows?
Women have been murdered for rejecting men so it is not only justifiable, but absolutely necessary, to report such incidents.
You see a "silly fireman" and "teenage behavior" but I see a grown man who feels so entitled to women's attention that the think she deserves to be assaulted. I think you need to re-examine your views and consider this from the point of view of the woman.
commanteer
Let's not get carried away. His behavior was atrocious and I have no problem with the police arresting him - I'm glad they did. But blindness would be an extraordinarily unusual result. Thousands of people get sand in their eyes daily at beaches around the world. Normally, it rinses out. Worst case, they might get a scratched cornea. Permanent damage is very, very rare. Akin to a scratch leading to amputation.
More likely permanent damage is emotional, from the shock and trauma of being attacked by a nutter like this.
Maria
And far too many live in fear, constantly on edge, having to be aware of their surroundings, wary of anyone near them who talks to them, all the bloody time. Called a bitch if you don't respond to catcalls and drunken bs from strangers, at in danger of being followed and attacked, if you do.
You have no idea what that's like, and lucky you. But ignorance isn't something to be proud of.
