Man arrested for torching 6 houses under construction

Police in Tokyo have arrested a 22-year-old unemployed man from Hino City on suspicion of setting fire to six houses that were being newly built in Tama in September.

All the fires took place within a 1.5-kilometer area between Sept 12 and Sept 21. Despite night patrols by police in areas where new houses were being built in Tama, the arsonist eluded them.

NTV reported Monday that police found security camera footage of the suspect, Satoshi Kasuya, filling plastic containers up at a gas station nearly one hour before the first fire was reported. The charred remainders of similar containers were found at the sites of the fires.

Police said Kasuya has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he started the fires because he was irritated, NTV reported.

I wasn't aware you could fill plastic containers with gasoline

You can't. It's illegal. This was an unmanned self-service gasoline stand according to Japanese news sources.

The English translations on TV also said this guy admitted setting the fires and that he was "irritated." Therefore, hope he is locked away safely forever. Scary having a potential fire bug running loose in the neighborhood.

Lots of people start fires when irritated, but they usually just use them to light cigarettes.

I definitely don't condone what this "irritated" individual has done but one reason he targeted homes that were just being built was that he knew there would be no people in them hence no casualties.

But he destroyed many people's dream homes and put surrounding houses and families in danger.

The explosive power of a gallon of gasoline equals that of 14 sticks of dynamite.

I can understand his irritation (without condoning his behaviour) It seems as soon as you sell your house in Japan it gets torn down by the new owner and another gets built in its place - hence a constant spate of construction and noise

Because he was irritated ... he will get suspended sentence. This type of people shall be locked in an individual cell so that he will not be irritated

Arsonists should get serious jailtime, they endanger lives.

I say the future owners and builders/developers of each of the affected structures should have an opportunity to directly express their "irritation" at this POS loser.

If he was found guilty and then put him into criminal insane institute for life.

I've never actually done it here outside of a marina, but in most countries you can fill plastic petrol containers that are made of conductive plastic that keeps a static charge from forming. It's useful for getting petrol for outboard motors, chainsaws and other tools.

Is irritation some kind of disease here? It seems lately every criminal who has beat their parent, kill their child or stabbed someone, when asked why they did it, they say they were irritated!!!

So, he was irritated? I can think of a few more adjectives to describe his state of mind.

I wasn't aware you could fill plastic containers with gasoline. I know you can't in developed countries.
