Police in Tokyo have arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after he tried to choke a 23-year-old woman as she walked home last July.

The incident occurred at around 1 a.m. on July 6 in Katsushika Ward, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said Masaaki Kumada, of no fixed occupation, followed the woman for about 250 meters after she left JR Koiwa Station. He then came up behind her, put one of his hands over her eyes and started to choke her with his other hand.

The woman was able to fight off her attacker and he ran away. Police said the victim suffered injuries to her neck which required two weeks to heal.

Police said Kumada was identified after an analysis of street surveillance camera footage. He was arrested on Friday. Police said Kumada has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he had been in a bad mood after losing income from his part-time job due to the coronavirus and that he just wanted to strike out at somebody. He told police he didn't know the victim.

The last part of these articles ( the excuses ) always cracks me up. This is serious and not funny, but it gives me a good laugh. Many stupid a-holes out there.

Yet another seriously screwed up and unmoored dude with the means, motive, and opportunity to exact revenge on a demonstrably uncaring society ruled by out of touch septuagenarians presiding over a world that’s ending not with a bang, but a whimper.

Ha-ha. I couldn't agree more. :‑) Nonetheless, I know that should not be taken lightly. :‑(

Why now? This happened LAST SUMMER? Why has it taken so long?

This is the speed of the Japanese Police. They have to collect all the videos from the public and private security cameras, review them, (hopefully) identify the suspect, take it to their supervisor and get his approval, take it to a prosecutor for his approval, take it to a judge for an arrest warrant and six months later they roll him up ... in the meantime, this perp may have been committing mayhem elsewhere on other victims.

"he tried to choke a 23-year-old woman as she walked home"

utterly sick and deranged.

Glad the victim recovered. This suspect should receive the firing squad. The world would be a better place without someone like this.

I thought safety in Japan regarding street crime just like Mainland China is top notch and one can meander around and not worry about being attacked?!!!. Maybe Japan should emulate Mainland China regarding laws.

Ever wonder how many people around you in a crowd, especially on a train platform, might be as nearly insane as this person became in their troubles? I never stand in front...

Most of crime committed by people who have temporary bad mood, it takes some times but still better since at least they got the right person. In Japan lot of innocent forced to make confession for crime they didn't commit.

Awful.

Can't begin to imagine the trauma the victim must be going through after the attack.

This suspect should receive the firing squad. The world would be a better place without someone like this.

Thankfully, proponents of knee jerk reactions and death penalties don't get to decide.

His crime was heinous but we need to study the lives and circumstances of such people and take into account their own mental health.

Find out why and how to prevent similar situations.

Maybe not, eh?

Mainland is a rather loaded term, and one that is used often by wumaos. This is Japan, not occupied Hong Kong.
