A 67-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after attempting to rob a convenience store across the street from a koban (police box) in Choshi, Chiba Prefecture.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 6:55 a.m. at a FamilyMart convenience store, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said Yoshio Miyauchi, an unemployed resident of Tokyo’s Nakano Ward, entered the store and grabbed the arm of the 63-year-old woman employee, demanding she give him cash from the register.

A man who witnessed the incident went across the street to the koban and told police what was going on. They went to the store and subdued Miyauchi.

he gets three meals a day and a bed and roof.

It's sadly a popular option many elder folks are choosing.

Winter is coming and he probably doesn’t have enough money to pay heating so...

Sadly this is the state that some of the poorest people, especially the elderly have to resort to get food and shelter! Commit a small crime to get in jail and repeat as needed.

Darwin Award is a common term used on the internet to describe such events by a generation obviously much younger than some.

Opps, I meant older generation can’t understand common language used by young people.

Darwin award has been used for over 35 yrs. Thing is,it's a posthumous title. it requires the subject to die. no one died in this case hence the irony that shot 6' over your young head.

Could be on purpose... unemployed, hungry, and looking for free lodging with food?

Yoshio Miyauchi moved restlessly on his bench Hibiya Park. There are certain signs to show that winter is coming. Birds begin to fly south. Women who want nice new warm coats on display in nearby Ginza become kind to their husbands. An empty cicada shell lay face up. A wilted maple leaf fell at Yoshio's feet. These are special signs for him that the songs of summer are over, fall is near and winter is soon to follow. Yoshio's mind now realized the fact. The time had come. He had to find some way to take care of himself during the cold weather. And therefore he moved restlessly on his seat.

Yoshio's hopes for the winter were not very high. He was not thinking of sailing away on a ship. He was not thinking of the southern skies of Okinawa, or the warmer waters of Sagami and Suruga Bay. Three months in Fuchu was what he wanted. Three months of prison food with warm miso soup every day and a futon every night, three months safe from the cold north wind and safe from cops. This seemed to Yoshio the most desirable thing in the world even if his surname Miyauchi suggests lineage within the palace.

winner of Darwin prize of 2020 in Japan is...

The Darwin Award involves taking yourself out of the gene pool. A couple of months in prison does not do that.
