Man arrested for umbrella attacks in Shinjuku

A 31-year-old man was arrested for assault on Tuesday, accused of attacking two women with his umbrella in Shinjuku Ward last week. The man, who lost his job at a bookbinding company last October, was quoted by police as saying: “I was frustrated after not being able to find another job,” and “I got angry with one of the women when I thought she told me not to drip water everywhere with my umbrella.”

Police said Hiroshi Tonimura, unemployed and of no fixed address, is accused of hitting a woman on her shoulder with his clear plastic umbrella on July 6 while in a FamilyMart convenience store in Shinjuku, before assaulting a second woman at a pedestrian crossing some 300 meters away. In both cases, it appears Tonimura took issue with perceived criticism of his umbrella etiquette.

The woman in the first incident was not injured, but the second woman suffered injuries expected to take several weeks to heal. Tonimura is accused of hitting the second woman in her face with his umbrella, pulling her to the ground by her hair and then hitting her face with his hand before stepping on her fingers and running off.

Tonimura was recorded by security cameras in the convenience store and in the vicinity, and was arrested after being spotted at a Hello Work employment office.

"Tonimura is accused of hitting the second woman in her face with his umbrella, pulling her to the ground by her hair and then hitting her face with his hand before stepping on her fingers and running off"........and all this happened in Shinjuku where there are hundreds of people everywhere anytime of the day or night.....and nobody grabbed him and gave him the lesson of his life (a good flogging) for hitting a woman?????

Charges against the first woman sound a bit iffy, but he certainly got his money's worth in the second instance. His actions are indefensible. Lock this clown up.

A friend of mine intervened in a similar situation back in 2003, ratpack, and was summarily charged with assault, fined three million yen, given a year in prison suspended for five, and then deported. The guy who had been beating on the woman was also charged with assault, fined, but was given an unsuspended sentence.

In an unrelated case, a Japanese friend restrained a chikan on the Saikyo line, and broke the pervert's wrist in a scuffle as he and the victim were attempting to get him off the train. You guessed it - the guy doing the right thing got assault charges, a massive fine, a suspended sentence and - insult to injury - had to pay for the perv's medical treatment.

Keep in mind that it is actually not lawful to use physical force in defense of another here unless that person is a member of your family or in some other way was connected to you prior to the altercation. You are actually expected to simply call the police and stay out of the way.

You intervene by speaking, I've done it a few times, simple, and it works.

something tells me we haven't seen the last of the umbrella avenger. he will be back one day to clean up the filth of shinjuku

If you intervene, you might have to keep it verbal, or better still, make it look like an accident. "Oops, did I trip over the umbrella man?" Frightfully sorry.

i can understand that it is preferable that bystanders do not escalate a situation with over-zealous involvement. however, the certainly that you will be punished for attempting to be a good samaritan hardly encourages people to look out for their fellow citizens. and then add to that the ineptitude of the boys in blue

Means, you should just stand in the side and shout, "BAKA, BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,BAKA,?" :-)

It is an interesting phenomenon that the first woman causes the bad feelings in a man and the second woman gets the shelacking from him. It does not seem to be isolated this case. Not to blame the first woman for this nutbag's actions, but it always seems that what one does often gets another woman hurt, even cases where we can say the first woman deserved it.

The Japanese economy is horrible, extremely horrible and hence, and all of these Japanese running around like ticking time bombs, ready to explode, because before they had too much prefer from working too much and then suddenly, anybody with out proper education and marketable skills gets thrown out like yesterday s trash! Very, very sad situation for not only the Japanese but also for many poor, 3rd worlders trying to survive in Japan.

There are two currencies in this world, one which leads to what we mostly see in the newspapers, and the other which leads to better life.
