"My life is trash. My misery is all because of the people around me," he was quoted as saying.

Terrible POV for a 36-year-old blaming others. If you want a better life and you blame others instead of focusing on moving forward and creating new relationships, you are wrong.

Typical of these selfish people blaming others for their issues.

As for being rejected, my gosh, I'm 28 (not 36 like him) and I've got not only rejected but also cheated on by former partner.

I took off the frustration playing football (soccer), this guy chooses this way? Indefensible and a clear sign of an unsound mind.

I can't even imagine what punishment would fit him.

Gosh.

30 ( +37 / -7 )

Premeditated and cold. This guy really needs help, obviously, but it's a bit late for that so he'll have to settle for a long prison sentence. The lack of human empathy shown in some of his statements is shocking and should be a catalyst for change in Japan. Promotion of work-life balance, eduction on mental health issues etc needs too be a top priority.

My life is trash. My misery is all because of the people around me,"

Nope, your life is trash because YOU are trash. And you could have made it better by making an effort and changing yourself instead blaming it on people around you. Now your life is going to get even worse and its perfectly deserved. No sympathy for you.

Another loser incel.

16 ( +31 / -15 )

Just another incel with a fragile ego blaming everyone but himself for his problems.

13 ( +19 / -6 )

My compassion for someone who's having a particularly difficult time at life ends where innocent people are targeted and hurt. Lock him up and don't let him out.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

In a society that heavily revolves around tatemae and honne, any slight complaint or rejection perceived by people is considered a mortal attack on their honor. It’s one of the major reasons why Japan has so many mental health patients per capital in the world, double the next highest country. People need to realize it’s ok to have a dent in your honor.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

Every person gets rejected in life. Why he thought to go negative is beyond me. Suck it up on move on. But not him. He just blamed everyone around him.

Terrible person he is.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

I saw on the Japanese news media all the shaming video of him leaving the police station, close up videos of his face etc, it's such a weak and ridiculous response to a complex and serious problem. It achives nothing and is unusual.

This shaming culture works for people who care about being shamed, people with mental health issues, don't care about that, it only deters regular people who are afraid of authority.

Japan is currently over indulging in fantasy and forgetting that it's not real.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

I once read a very informative post on a message board, written by a lawyer, explaining that the nature of justice has to balance punishment and rehabilitation.

Trouble is, I can't see people like this guy being rehabilitated.

He's decided that he's a loser, and that it's anyone's fault but his own. That sets up a very dangerous mindset of "justifiable revenge", because he considers that he has nothing to lose.

People like that have no purpose in a civilised society and should be removed from it, either permanently or for as long as possible.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I wonder what it'll take for Japan to start offering a better work-life balance for its people. All of these incidents are glaring signs of how stressed out, mentally, physically and emotionally people are here. Add that to the lack of mental health care resources and you've got a recipe for disaster.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Absolute scum and woman-hating coward. I hope he is locked away in the worst facility Japan has, and never sees freedom again in his pathetic life.

I hope the poor victims will one day recover physically and mentally.

> A man arrested in a recent random knife attack on passengers on a commuter train in Tokyo had difficulties in his personal relationships, including being rejected in online dating, according to investigative sources.

The rejections were right on target then. What an L.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

A classic case of victimhood mentality. The world is rife with this mental illness.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

The J-government is to blind and stubborn to realize how deep are mental problems in their country.

In a nation which is regarded with one of the most rigid society with people unable to socialize naturally and incapable often to create a natural relationship so they need to use Omiai and be the most sexless country in the world you get such situations.

Japan might have an excellent health care system but in the psychologic and psychiatric aspect they are just very low.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

A man’s trouser belt might be useful for defending yourself from an insane knife attacker on the train. You pull your belt out and swing it around to keep away the attacker. If you’re lucky, the buckle of the belt might hit his face.

Even a guy who looks normal on the outside can be heaving inside with hatred for women and be a hair trigger away from violence.

I'm sure you are not treating every man you meet as a potential psychopath? If so, you would not be able to have any type of relationship with men.

Almost all men are normal, and NOT violent psychopaths with a hatred of women. The ones who are, like this animal, should be permanently removed from society.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Yusuke Tsushima, 36, who had told investigators he wanted to kill "happy looking women," was sent to prosecutors on Sunday for attempted murder after stabbing a female university student on board a rapid express Odakyu Electric Railway train on Friday

As someone who wasn't blessed in the romantic relationship department, I can feel for this guy's despair and bitterness but I'll never resort to attacking people just because of it. I hope this guy spends a lot of time to rethink his life choices and redirect that energy towards something more productive. If he does get a second chance, I hope he sets his life straight this time.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Incels are the losers in the fierce competition to attract and persuade a partner to procreate. It's a deadly serious matter, the propagation of the species, and society needs to allocate more resources and come up with a better game plan to help people find sexual fulfillment, which is not only the responsibility of the individual, but of the social collective, too. Our sympathies for Tsushima's victims must take precedence without forgetting that the perp is also a wretched victim of the terrifying pressures to fulfill his biological destiny. In the context of finding love, a natural, human need, the soul-destroying work-life balance of modern Japan has a lot to answer for.

This guy is why women are afraid when they are approached by unknown men on the train or in other public places.

I am a foreign man. I am afraid when I am approached by unknown men on the train or in other public places.

Parents who teach their kids that life is supposed to be fair, are setting their kids up for failure. The generation of participation trophies created kids who don't know how to fail or be wrong. This guy didn't know how to fail. And he thought life should be fair.

This guy is why women are afraid when they are approached by unknown men on the train or in other public places.

This is also why women don't feel comfortable saying no directly, and are afraid to fight back if some guy gropes them.

Even a guy who looks normal on the outside can be heaving inside with hatred for women and be a hair trigger away from violence.

Men are scared of men like this too. We never know who has a weapon or a gun. I'm not sure why you think that this is a female only situation. I'm strong, but not stronger than a knife.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

I was constantly rejected in my 20's and 30's too. Now in my 40's I managed to turn the tables.

Being rejected usually means you are sending out awkward energy because you have low self esteem and are not conscious of your outputs.

If this is you, stand in front of a mirror and face your fears. Learn to smile with your eyes, make that your resting face, fix your posture, don't constantly look at people you would like to engage with but let them look at you.

Learn to recognise when somebody is interested in you, and only then try to engage them.

There is one guy on youtube called coach corey wayne who is worth listening to.

The future is changeable and it's your job to change it, nobody elses.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

MIKUDASU (google translate) = 'look down upon'

It is so fundamentally important for the Japanese male to be looked up to by his female partner. After Mummy finally gives over control of the man-baby, it is essential that the ('Baton-touch') girlfriend understands that her role is to feed the insatiable, narcissistic ego of the little man...

4 ( +6 / -2 )

The total lack of empathy and avoidance of responsibility screams Narcissist to me. Hope everyone recovers physically and mentally. He should never walk the streets again!

3 ( +5 / -2 )

I wonder why people on here can have such sympathy for people who have physical sicknesses but only rage and hate for those who are mentally sick. If people are sick, they should be helped, no matter whether physical or mental.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

gee I wonder why the ladies don't like him.... er..

3 ( +3 / -0 )

society needs to allocate more resources and come up with a better game plan to help people find sexual fulfillment, which is not only the responsibility of the individual, but of the social collective, too.

I came to the exact opposite conclusion.

Tsushima is quoted:

“My life is trash. My misery is all because of the people around me," he was quoted as saying.”

No one is responsible for your happiness- you are. It starts from within and then with others. You cannot expect others to satisfy your individual needs as no one can know you as well as you know yourself. The idea that Tsushima was left unfilled by societies failure to satisfy him is the reason behind his criminal behavior.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

and society needs to allocate more resources and come up with a better game plan to help people find sexual fulfillment, which is not only the responsibility of the individual, but of the social collective, too

Helping people find "sexual fulfillment" should be ver, very, VERY far down on the list of things that the "social collective" should be doing. Especially in Japan, where fuuzoku establishments are practically ubiquitous. Society doesn't owe you the right to have sex. What a preposterous idea.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

If I was on a train in such a situation I hope I would be brave enough to try and overcome the attacker. It was a crowded train but it seems no one had the courage to try and save the other innocent people from injury or potential death. I am already 66 and not so quick and strong but I know it would be my responsibility to try.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Tsushima spent his childhood in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward, where the stabbing incident on the Odakyu Line train took place, and graduated from a high school in the capital. He went on to study at Chuo University in Tokyo, entering the Faculty of Science and Engineering, but dropped out, the sources said.

From where he lived during his childhood also can manage to go to university, it looks like that he live with family that can afford living in Tokyo and can afford his education to University.

Too bad in Japan once you are out from the system like being dropped out, it's hard to get back. You might end up living blue collar life but switching blue collar job too like him often it just make it worst.

after being ridiculed at social gatherings and rejected in dating services.

It's a custom in Japan to introduce your university or company during any social introduction and judgement about you by other people is being made during that time. Doing blue collar job, also don't have any stable career will be very hard to get a good judgement from other people during that gatherings.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

I strongly disagree since it's society that creates standards of public conduct and moral values

And what does that have to do with society being responsible for its citizens' sexual gratification? Having sex is not a human right. And as a biological need it can be taken care of with your own hand. Anything else is just a happy bonus. I am all for legalized prostitution, but if you start arguing that it should be covered by your health insurance... Just, no.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

He told the police he quit because he was "fed up" with difficulties in personal relationships, according to the sources.

It’s hard to make friends sometimes, but I bet the stabbing thing is at least part of the problem. Maybe going out for ice cream would be a more effective strategy?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

As mentioned above, this sounds like a combination of victimhood (higai mousou) and narcissism.

I don't know where the victimhood comes from, but modern society clearly encourages narcissism and mostly does so because it drives consumption.

While I am happily married and a believer in the traditional family, relationships are things with ups and downs and you have to work at them. It is wrong to think a relationship is going to come along and simply bestow you happiness. That has to come from within yourself.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

This is why YouTube channels like Entrepreneurs in Cars, or Rollo Tomassi's channel and book "The Rational Male" are increasing in popularity in the West. Men are increasingly losing interest in "chasing women" and being rejected because they aren't "alpha" enough. Men are realizing that women are not the honest, innocent, "girl next door" types they often pretend to be (especially in Japan) and that they'll ditch you for an alpha in a second if they get the chance.

Violence is obviously not the answer, but young Japanese men (whom many grow up without fathers) are in desperate need of positive male role models. I hear all the time foreign women say things like "Japanese men are too feminine."

1 ( +4 / -3 )

So many of these types of incidents stem from mental health issues. Here’s to hoping that Japan can start brining mental wellness to the forefront of its focus. Like most things in Japan, in order to kick start this, the companies need to step up and do their part. Make counseling available, provide safe environments, make it less taboo. Not justifying his actions in anyway, but punishing these people is a bandaid, not a solution.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This man is very dangerous and has to be sent either to jail or to a secure mental ward for a psychiatric evaluation.

There are many men out everywhere who cannot find any nice female friend, but this alone does not make them hateful and commit serious crimes. The main point, if you are in such a situation and alone and feel lonely is never to develop hate - hate is the straight way to self-destruction.

This man has clearly various other problems too and cannot blame women or society for his own shortcomings - he can only blame himself. 36 y/o and still no regular job and income - how are women responsible for your failure at your work place?

Nowadays there are many men worldwide who are looking for other activities because they are lonely and fail to be accepted by women. They prefer to travel around or like motorcycles or study foreign languages or like sport activities or whatever.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

There was no security in the train car at the time of the assault. So why this:

- “coming at a time when the capital was hosting the Olympics under tightened security.” -

??

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Yes. The simple fact is that if such men had had a sexual outlet with a woman - paid or otherwise - they would not have reached the boiling point of committing such an act. That’s just the fact.

How could any of us possibly know such "fact." Had this guy gone to have sex with a prostitute, the stabbed victim could have been that same prostitute. Just as it was the case two months ago with that poor woman in Tachikawa who got stabbed by her 19 y/o client while she was trying to call for help.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

For those who say suicide is selfish, surely this guy would have been the perfect candidate to off himself and not try to kill others.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

create. It's a deadly serious matter, the propagation of the species, and society needs to allocate more resources and come up with a better game plan to help people find sexual fulfillment,

What the author of this truly bizarre post is regurgitating is the often repeated incel idea that all men (or at least they) should all get government-issued girlfriends.

What a nice way to reduce women to a literal commodity.

And because these women are government-issued and presumably don’t have a say in the matter, we get to the real nub of the ‘government issued girlfriend’ idea:

Men believe they have a right to sex, and if women won’t give it to them willingly, it’s up to the government to provide them with sex slaves.

Yes. The simple fact is that if such men had had a sexual outlet with a woman - paid or otherwise - they would not have reached the boiling point of committing such an act. That’s just the fact.

So, one has to ask oneself where is one’s concern - compassion for the victims or scornful hatred of the assailant.

It’s amoral and unethical if they’re seeking any kind of ‘sympathy for the Devil’ from society. Ignored this a.m. “Crime” article, designed & successfully executed to get everyone to focus on the perp. Personally I think this guy needs a tight ring around his scrotum too must pent up testosterone. What I don't understand is this POS was able to stab nine other people -- four women and five men. "*He had also expressed his frustration for the past six years at women who appeared to be happy. The sources quoted him as saying, "I came to want to kill happy looking couples and women" after being ridiculed at social gatherings and rejected in dating services". He is lucky, perhaps he can get away with that in Japan.** ***I can recall visiting Chicago as a tourist and the train was crowded and a lady screamed saying a man was molesting her. From out of no where several men jumped out of their seats, jumped the guy, and pulled the emergency door open while the train was still moving at a high rate of speed before stopping and threw him off head first. I couldn't believe what I saw but the men said we don't like that pervert shiat!!! I guess the rules in every country is different. **

The homicidal incel strikes again. A Japanese Elliot Rodger. This is part of what we call ‘toxic masculinity’: he felt that just because he existed, he was entitled to women. And when those women turned him down, he lashed out like a petulant child. If it’s a choice between these incel types and the so-called herbivore men, I’d take the latter all day, every day, and twice on Sundays.

I do concede this is not a fact. A person could be visiting paid for services with a vengeful motive etc. My only point was that the sexual deprivation motive could be diminished.

It’s terrible about the case you mention.

Always good to have a good support system and family/friends that can tell him that life goes on after failed relationships. Who cares that he went to college. Many parents can throw their money at a kid's education to act like they are good parents. Parents should also be able to listen to their kids problems and support them emotionally.

Half-watching a popular talk show on TV this morning, I was surprised to see a criminal lawyer saying that under Japanese law as it stands, this guy probably faces 13 - 15 years in prison max.

Among the reasons the lawyer gave for this estimate was the fact that he didn't actually kill anyone, and most of the people who were hurt were not attacked with murderous intent, more as collateral damage. He added that the police will do their best to have him face more charges, though, like with the cooking oil attempt.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

kumagaijin

Sure, and quite often they are, but Japanese men tend not to have the confidence to approach them. Its becoming a problem in many industrialized countries as traditional male roles are decreasing. Women are gaining the upper hand in society and traditional gender roles are breaking down. Jordan Peterson also talks about this phenomenon.

Hypergamy? That is a problem in all advanced societies, and it is massively compounded by demographic imbalance (i.e. a surplus of males). Creates lots of problems down the road.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Surely it’s not the job of the police to decide on what charges he should face….

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

This guy is why women are afraid when they are approached by unknown men on the train or in other public places.

This is also why women don't feel comfortable saying no directly, and are afraid to fight back if some guy gropes them.

Following your logic, every single man and woman should be terrified to talk to anyone or even leave their houses.

Even a guy who looks normal on the outside can be heaving inside with hatred for women and be a hair trigger away from violence.

Yes, anyone, man, woman or child could be a psychopath, sociopath, a thief, etc. That's why we have doors with lock at homes and police around.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I'm confused as to why girls would reject a self centered, violent, psychopathic man child. Perhaps he had poor fashion sense or bad table manners. Or just maybe it was because he was a self centered, violent, psychopathic man child.

Man arrested in train stabbings says he suffered rejection in relationships

So, because he suffered a broken heart, he wanted other people to suffer severed limbs and slashed organs?

Throw the book at our Romeo Man-child and toss him in a cell never to see the light of day (and any of us) again.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

And there is a big difference between being a socially awkward person who can't make social connections versus those who turn their hardships/ isolation/ depression etc into physical acts of violence/ attempted murder and/ or actual murder.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

As some psychology professors say, he might have been obsessed with being conspicuous to people around him since he was young. It might be shocked for him not to be taken care of by his surroundings when he was in college. Even so, that cannot be the reason he took it out on other person. Moreover, attempting murder is out of the question. Whether or not he is mentally ill, he should be prosecuted and take a strict penalty.

It is wrong to label someone as a loser.

A lot happens and not happens in our lives.

I am a highly educated, good looking and have good personal relationships.

I also have had a lot of rejections in life, both work and relationships.

Things not always go the way we want them to be. After each rejection, if we do not analyze what we did wrong, we would be in a desperate place.

We cannot have everything that we want in life.

I read somewhere that we win only sometimes. so be prepared for a lot rejections and you will not be disappointed.

There is a lot of fish in the pond.

I read something from a big American Investment company, one of the founders said,

Keep your expectations low so if things do not workout as you expected, you have little to loose.

We need to stay calm and if things work out celebrate otherwise move one.

Really smart move on this guy's part. Bad luck with woman and sexually frustrated. I'm sure if he spent enough time online he could have connected with another sociopathic loner woman and made a connection. But he tried to kill as many people as possible, ensuring a prison sentence where he has absolutely zero chance of sex or love. Smart. If you're that desperate buy a prostitute. That's sleezy but better than stabbing innocent people! Loser, no wonder nobody was interested in him!

In relationships, just as in business, I go in having zero expectations, because then I will have nothing to come out of being disappointed or bitter about. If it works out then I am pleasantly surprised and happy. Keep your expectations low and take every loss in stride. Learn to loose and then you will eventually win. I mean heck, what is the point of porn other than an outlet for sexual frustration?
