Police in Hiroshima have arrested a 70-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 72-year-old wife in a parked car.

A police officer spotted an elderly woman slumped inside a vehicle that was parked at Asa Service Area along the Chugoku Expressway's outbound lane in Hiroshima's Asakita Ward at around 5:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Fuji TV reported. There was a man seated in the driver’s seat. The driver, Junichi Hosoi, told the officer that his wife Yoshiko was sleeping.

After the car was moved to a West Nippon Expressway Co (NEXCO) facility, the officer checked on Yoshiko again and discovered that she was dead. Her clothing was not disheveled and there were no visible signs of trauma on her body. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead due to strangulation.

Hosoi was arrested on suspicion of murder and has admitted to killing his wife in the car on Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said they received a call from Hosoi's relatives at around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, reporting that the couple were missing.

Yes, forced confessions are well-known to happen in Japan. However, there doesn't seem to be anything suspicious about this one.

It's incredibly easy for a coroner to differentiate between forced strangulation, which leaves a ton of medical evidence, and the extremely unlikely occurrence of accidental suffocation while sleeping due to an odd position, which may not even be a thing, quite frankly.

@garypen Infants can and do suffocate themselves like that. Its a thing and its called positional asphyxiation. The elderly often lose a host of functions that render them very similar to children, both mentally and physically. Plus they get problems almost unique to the elderly.

It's incredibly easy for a coroner to...

...be incompetent. I read more news than I watch CSI. My faith in "authorities" is slim.

I don't trust confessions in Japan as many are forced. Seems like a reasonable possibility this one was forced as well. No signs of trauma but they decided it was strangulation? Oh really? How about a 72 year old woman suffocated herself by sleeping with her head hanging while seated in a bad position? And then her grieving husband was too traumatized to refute repeated police insistence that he killed her. How about that?
