Police have arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of stealing money from a hospital patient’s room in Musashino, Tokyo.

According to police, Shuji Tokutake, of no fixed address, is accused of stealing 1,000 yen from the room of a 52-year-old hospitalized woman on June 2, 2021, TV Asahi reported. Police said Tokutake was identified after an examination of surveillance camera footage but his whereabouts remained unknown.

Police said Tokutake surfaced again earlier this year as the suspect in thefts that occurred from patients’ rooms at two university hospitals in Tokyo. He was arrested in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, on April 15.

Since the beginning of this year, there have been approximately 20 cases of theft of cash and other items at hospitals in Tokyo, Saitama and Chiba prefectures. Police said Tokutake has hinted at being involved in dozens of cases and quoted him as saying, “I don't remember all of them clearly, but I have a faint memory of stealing money from some of the hospitals.”

OK, stealing from patients in hospitals is a new low, but aren’t hospitals supposed to check who’s goes into a ward? Last time I was hospitalized it was only family members and only for two hours.

Also, he stole 1,000 yen. There must be more lucrative hunting grounds…
