Police in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of attempting to kill his 27-year-old ex-wife.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:10 a.m. on Wednesday. Kyodo News reported that police received a call from a woman who said that she had been stabbed in the back and stomach by her ex-husband.

Police rushed to the apartment and found the woman bleeding from stab wounds. A bloodied knife was found near the woman. She was taken to hospital where doctors said her wounds were not life-threatening.

The woman’s former husband, Hikaru Nishibata, a company employee, was arrested about four hours later. Police said he has denied the charge.

Police said the woman had consulted with them four times since 2017 about trouble with Nishibata but had declined to file a criminal complaint.

After her divorce, the woman and her child moved to the apartment in Ichikawa about six months ago.

Divorce with kids is a very prickly and dangerous thing in Japan. There is no such thing as property settlement, joint custody or structured child support.

Actually you are supposed to organize those things before you sign the divorce papers.

If you make the mistake of signing them before you do any of that then you will be limited to what conditions are set by law or conditions the person who hands the paper in stipulates in the area provided.

Divorce with kids is a very prickly and dangerous thing in Japan. There is no such thing as property settlement, joint custody or structured child support. In many cases the fathers are denied any access to their kids and are slapped with ludicrous child support demands from the mother. There is no information in this article about the circumstances of their separation but it’s likely these kinds of circumstances led to the violence. Japan really needs to update and structure its divorce laws in an attempt to stop this kind of retributive violence.

Was the child theirs or “her” child as first written?

Regardless of whether or not they are both the parents, as long as she's the mother, then "her child" is still technically correct.

He has denied the charge.

Don't forget this means he is innocent till proven guilty.

Although I kind of doubt the woman was able to stab herself in the back but you never know what somebody might be capable of doing in an attempt to get back at somebody.

Hopefully they can get some CCTV footage of him leaving the area and some fingerprints from the knife to prove him guilty rather than to just assume he is guilty.

Reads like she’s needed help from police since 2017 but declined, possibly fearing something not yet disclosed here.

Hope she recovers soon and the child is okay, gods forbid they witnessed the stabbing of the woman.
