Police in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture, on Monday arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of attempting to kill his work colleague.
According to police, the suspect, Naoto Kaihara, turned himself in at a police station at around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Fuji TV reported. Police said the victim was found bleeding from a knife wound to the chest on the stairs near the corridor outside his apartment at around 5:55 p.m. Sunday. He was taken to hospital where he was in a stable condition on Monday, police said.
Police said Kaihara and the victim worked at the same company and that there had been trouble between them but gave no further details.
A blood-stained knife was left at the scene of the crime and Kaihara was seen running away from the apartment complex, police said.
