Man arrested over murder of 63-year-old woman in Chofu

Police in Chofu, Tokyo, said Sunday they have arrested an unemployed 43-year-old man on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 63-year-old woman as she walked home on Saturday night.

According to police, the man, who lives in the area, attacked Reiko Matsubara with a survival knife at around 10:30 p.m., Fuji TV reported. Matsubara, who teaches part-time at a nearby school, was walking home after shopping.

Police said that the man approached her as she walked by a field and attacked her. Matsubara was stabbed in the neck and other parts of her body several times.

A passerby subdued the suspect until police arrived.

Matsubara was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

The suspect has remained silent, police said, adding that he has been in trouble before after breaking into another person's home.

Bravo brave passerby. I am sorry to hear Reiko wasn't saved, but this person's act might have saved one or many others.

I bet he did it so he would be taken care of, and never have to get a job.

Who was this passerby who subdued the suspect? Sounds like a good citizen needing some recognition.
