Police in Chiba City have charged a 29-year-old man over the murder of a 41-year-old woman who was found dead in her apartment on April 4.
Police said the suspect, Ryohei Fujinaga, was arrested earlier on April 16 on a separate charge of attempting to sexually assault another woman, Fuji TV reported Thursday.
On Thursday afternoon, police also charged Fujinaga with murdering Rina Kayano.
Kayano, a contract worker, was found by her father at around 10 p.m. on April 4 He had received a phone call from her company, saying that she had not come to work that day. When Kayano's father went to her apartment in Inage Ward, he found her lying face up on a futon with multiple stab wounds to her abdomen and neck. Police said the victim appeared to have been killed in a stabbing frenzy.
A neighbor said Kayano had lived in the apartment for seven years, was friendly and did not appear to be in any trouble or worried about anything.
Police said Kayano's money and other valuables were still in the apartment and believe the brutality of the killing indicates it may have been done by someone with a strong grudge.
According to police, Fujinaga lived nearby and a knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was found in his apartment.
Police said Fujinaga has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying he broke into Kayano's apartment early in the morning of April 4 with the intention of robbing it but she awoke and tried to resist him. He said he had never met her before.© Japan Today
