Police in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of killing a 54-year-old woman who was found dead in her bathtub last July. The suspect, Matsudo Koto, is the adopted son of the victim, Naoko Takai.
According to police, the suspect, whose adopted name is Rin Takai, claims to be a consultant residing in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. He is accused of killing his adoptive mother over a ¥150 million life insurance policy, Kyodo News reported. The victim was found dead in the bathtub, partially submerged, with a bandage wrapped tightly around her right wrist, at around 11 a.m. on July 26, at her house in Takatsuki City. Takai, a company employee who lived alone, was last seen at her office on July 21, prior to the long holiday weekend for the Tokyo Olympics. She was due back at work on July 26.
When she didn't show up for work, Takai's boss contacted one of her relatives and they visited the apartment and found the body. Police said Takai had no pre-existing medical conditions, and no drugs or alcohol were found in her system. Pressure marks were found on her left wrist, indicating she may have been restrained by bandages on both arms, police said. An autopsy revealed that she had drowned on or around July 23.
Police said that the life insurance payout beneficiary was Takai’s adopted son, who did not live with her.

Talk about the dictionary definition of ungrateful. This woman made the conscious decision of taking him into her home and making him a part of the family; raised him; and this is how he decides to repay her. Horrible. RIP to the woman and condolences to the family. As for the scumbag, toss him in a cell and throw away the key.

I can’t even picture ¥150 million yen. I guess he is still legally entitled to it, but can’t spend for 25 years. By then Japanese yen will be worth 10 cents.

I think it’s standard policy that anyone who killed the insured is not entitled to the insurance money. It’s not so hard to picture ¥150 million. It’s just 150 bundles of a hundred ¥10,000 bank notes . You can carry them in a backpack.

What people do for a bit of cash. Terrible mindset.

He will NOT get the insurance payout as he killed her.
There are provisions in Insurance policies.

No good deed goes unpunished, especially in Japan

I heard many Japanese people died alone at home, it would be better for that poor woman to died alone than to be killed alone at her own home.

Matsudo Koto and/or Rin Takai both seem to have been found guilty already after having been arrested a year after the alleged killing..

People have killed for much less.

This was not adoption in the way you may be understanding it.
There are sometimes financial and tax reasons for "adopting" an adult in Japan.

Actually 150M yen wouldn’t fit into a backpack. An oversized duffel bag perhaps. It’s also quite heavy.
