Police in Tokyo have arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of sexually assaulting and robbing a visually impaired woman in her 20s in her apartment last October.
According to police, the suspect Tetsuya Majima, entered the woman’s unlocked second-floor apartment in Nerima Ward before dawn last Oct 22, Fuji TV reported. The woman told police she was awakened by a man who threatened to kill her if she resisted.
Police allege that Majima, who works at a facility for disabled people in Nerima Ward, sexually assaulted the woman and then stole about 25,000 yen from her handbag before leaving.
The woman, who lives alone, contacted a friend for help. The friend called 110. Police said Majima, who was arrested on Wednesday, surfaced as a suspect after surveillance camera footage showed him leaving the vicinity of the apartment building on a motorbike at the time.

Like many other cases we've read about recently, there is a long flash-to-bang delay between the crime and the arrest (5 to 6 months in this case). I would doubt that a rapist wasn't out doing it again after he found himself still unarrested days or weeks later.
On a different note, I thought it said something good about Japan that a visually-impaired woman could live and function by herself here (other than the sexual predator like Mr. Majima). Good infrastructure to allow someone to exist (and perhaps even work) on their own, in an independent fashion.

Why leave your doors unlocked?
Don't try to blame the victim! There are many different scenarios which could have taken place which may have lead to her forgetting to lock her door/window or perhaps thinking she locking it but not really locking it. I do it sometimes. We all have left our doors open at somepoint because either we forgot or just think nothiing of it. But don't try to blame the victim.

I am not speaking of something such as stealing a candy bar from a convenience store or a personal argument. It is NOT an insult to Japan as it is a beautiful country. It is just that something has to change to stop these sadistic incidents because for some reason they occur in Japan and NEVER in Singapore, Korea, Mainland China or Taiwan.

Why leave your doors unlocked? Just because the women left her door unlocked doesn't mean he can just open the door and violate her! All I can say if what I read is true this guy is sick and needs to be put down. Rape is the lowest of the lowest crime and to take advantage of a disable person makes it 10 times wors

Having lived in Taiwan for a while, I conclude that Taiwan is safer than Japan. Taiwan's younger people seem to have better standard moral and social responsibility than Japan, therefore there is not the growing level of juvenile delinquency and recidivism that Japan has.

I feel extremely sorry for this woman. Nobody should ever have to go through Terrible trauma. This woman needs justice right now.
This man should receive eighty (“80”) years in prison along with being caned or alternatively the firing squad.
I thought Japan is a safe country just like Singapore, Korea, Mainland China, and Taiwan and nobody regardless of gender has to worry about being a victim of violent crime. I feel violent crime of this sort was unheard of in Japan until this last decade and unheard of in the other four East Asia countries. What happened to the Japan especially the Japan of the 1970s, 1980s and the Edo era where something like this never occurred??????
Something needs to change so Japan can be as safe as Singapore, Korea, Mainland China, and Taiwan and go back to the way it is as the Edo era and/or the Japan of the 1970s and 1980s.

Very normal to not lock doors in Japan. Lets not suggest this has anything to do with this unforgivable crime. People like this young woman are entitled to live in a society where one does not need to lock their doors.

There has been a myth for a long time that Japan is a mecca of safety, but that is not quite the case. There has always been crime in Japan. (there has always been police stations in Japan, there has always been prisions in Japan).
But years ago, there seemed to be a code. You would never threaten or attack an old person or a visually impaired person, or steal from them.
(Even with an alcohol fuelled fight on a Saturday night, if a person went down, never kick a person who is on the ground).
There seems to be a new kind of viciousness about now.

As Japan is usually a safe place, you surely can keep doors unlocked. You can see that often in parking lots where even cars are open or for example our neighbors keep the doors wide open to let the air circulate and save on AC in summer. In this special case here, it could be that she was advised to keep it open for enabling sudden help from neighbors or care services if something happens or a household accident occurs and such. So maybe this coward psycho knew about that procedure from his workplace or even gave her earlier that advice himself, who knows.

Because there was a time (obviously a different era) when people in Japan could leave their doors unlocked in perfect safety.
But those days were before this 34 year was even born.
