Police in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, on Sunday arrested a 53-year-old man on suspicion of murdering his wife at her home in June.
According to police, Mitsunori Yamada stabbed his wife Satomi, 53, to death as she slept at around 1 a.m. on June 27. Fuji TV quoted police as saying that Yamada has admitted to the charge but has so far given no motive.
Yamada was living apart from his wife while he worked in another city in Nagano Prefecture. She lived with her son, daughter and her parents-in-law. Police said Yamada had dinner with the family on the night of June 26 and then left at around 8 p.m.
But police believe he came back, sneaked into the house and killed his wife by cutting her throat as she slept. Her daughter discovered the body.
Investigators said street surveillance camera footage showed Yamada's car near the house at the time of the murder.
