Police said Saturday that have arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly stealing 1.8 million yen in cash in Ginza on Friday. The man had claimed that two men robbed him.
According to a TV Asahi report, the man, an employee at a precious metal dealership, told police he was taking the money in a bag to the bank at about 10:45 a.m., when a voice called out to him from behind. He told police that when he turned, two men were there and that one of them struck him on the face with a bar, and took the bag.
However, police said Saturday that surveillance cameras showed no one approaching the man. Upon further questioning, the man admitted that he made the story up and had stashed the money in his car parked nearby. He told police he injured his face himself to make it look real, TV Asahi reported. He was quoted as saying that he needed the money.
