Police in Hiroshima said Friday they are searching for a man who assaulted a boy with an umbrella on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, the victim, a 14-year-old schoolboy, was walking home with a friend in Aki Ward at around 5:30 p.m., when a man standing nearby suddenly poked him in the face with an umbrella.
TV Asahi reported that the boy was struck underneath the right eye with enough force to draw blood. The boy was taken to hospital and treated for a minor contusion. Doctors say his injury is not serious.
Police described the boy's attacker as around 40 years old and 160 cm tall, wearing a black sweater and black jeans and carrying a shoulder bag, TV Asahi reported.

......hmm alot of odd stuff like this has been showing up alot. just alot of the older generation fed up and not wanting to deal with the younger generation. he could have been drunk or just having a bad day, but for the fact he abused a child and could have caused blindness (thank hyne he didint) justice still needs to be served to this sad excuse of a man.
Fadamor
First of all, 40 is not "old".
Second of all, there's nothing in the article that said the guy "ran". In fact, there's nothing that says the guy left the scene even at a brisk walk.

megosaa, nice try...but you don't have an umbrella.

i am currently wearing a black sweater and black jeans, am 160 cm tall, and own a shoulder bag. :O

IT'''s ME, quote: "You even in Japan or got a kid here? You are way off the mark here. The local kids would fight tooth and nail if they were confronted with such a person. I spoke to my son 11 and he said he would ring the bell and ask for his ball as would all his friends. Yes, he is taught to back off and not to make a situation worse."
Erm... ring the bell? Ball? Not quite sure which story you are referring to, but the answer to your first question is yes and yes.
Plus I have spent many happy hours watching the arguments go round and round in faculty meetings over the rights and wrongs of hitting back. If you hit back, you're stuffed, is the plain message I learnt there. Maybe as a kid, though, anything goes.

@kansaifun "There might be such extenuating circumstances...." maybe standing in his way to catch the train, is that enough? Strange they never seem to attack a big gangster type

Where is the NRA when we need it the most?? If this young boy had himself a Saturday Night Special who could pull a Dirty Harry and have shot the face off this old geezer with that terrible umbrella! Wait, maybe this old geezer could have pulled out his own weapon first? Wait! Maybe we should just BAN ALL UMBRELLAS? Or was it guns? God I thank you for having bad umbrellas here in Japan and not UZIS!

There seems to be a lot of stories about children being attacked by adults lately.

I'll bet it was one of those regular umbrellas, not a compact one.

Nice story. Actually, for all the bad news we read here there are the at least as many good stories, but the media are not in the business of publishing them.

Now that is something PLEASANT to read among all these chaotic news stories. Thank you my old friend~ <3

There was an incident last year.
About twenty kids playing in the park and throwing snow-balls, one hit a window(not shattered), Half the kids including the throwing kid did a runner, the rest apologised and found the kid that threw it and pushed him to come forward and apologise = no punishment for anyone.
Owner(friend) was rather amused with the whole incident.

I spoke to my son 11 and he said he would ring the bell and ask for his ball as would all his friends. Yes, he is taught to back off and not to make a situation worse.
But if he is confronted physically he will kick butt and take names.

Kids here are taught not to lift a finger to fight back. (They are then morally untouchable.)
If the kid had reacted, the law would probably be charging him with something too.

Another idiot who lacks self control, seems there are way too many of these people in this country, only thinking of themselves. Show some maturity and excercise some self control, weak fool.
Doesnt matter what these kids did to this guy (if anything at all) to poke some on in the face by the eye shows serious malicious intent and this R's ole needs to be found and punished severely, Poking umbrellas in poeples eyes is way out of line this guy needs his umbrella jammed right up where the sun dont shine and the handle broken off it so they cant remove it.
Men attacking kids, kicking them in the nose, poking them with umbrellas, stabbing them ramdomly shows serious lack of social ability. Maybe there is something badly lacking in teaching human interaction here..................

get away from my dumplings! whack, whack, whack
sillygirl
ummm, let me guess -the guy was feeling frustrated, or he wanted to know what it felt like to poke someone`s eye out, he hates that his own youth is waning.......... no matter what this idiot was thinking i hope he gets arrested and charged with aggravated assault. there is way too much aggravated assault in this country and it is usually not prosecuted.

Unless the guy was drunk, I don't understand his reasoning. I often think of the time I was called to defend myself at a local izakaya for accidentally bumping a bar stool into a customer's stool unknowingly while moving it to make more room for my seating arrangement. However, 5:30 P.M. is rather earty to be drunk so I suppose the guy just lost his marbles.

Another day, another tough guy in Japan.

What, now we got umbrella stabbers? Crazy.

The_the_in_the_way: "Well, we do usually assume the injured party did nothing, since that is the way they report it. It is remotely possible the teens assaulted the man first, he successfully defended himself and just went home. He may not have reported it because Japan is not exactly kind to people who fight back."
Then why did the old guy run? Why not stay and explain his case?
BlueWitch
What a scumbag! Assaulted the kid with his umbrella then ran like a coward. If you're going to act criminal have the decency to own up to it. That said, SOME men (and some women for that matter!) between 40's~60's are proving to be a serious embarrassment to this country. More anger management classes to this mentally handicapped by lack-of-common-sense geezers.
nath
If they find him, the kid should be able to poke him back. 40 years old and you cant control yourself.

CrazyJoe.
Given the percentage of Japans population that lives in the Kanto region not surprising you will get news like this mostly from there.
CrazyJoe
The boy could have been blinded, he's lucky he wasn't. These incidents were mostly occurring in the Kanto region but it can happen anywhere.
The_the_in_the_way
Well, we do usually assume the injured party did nothing, since that is the way they report it. It is remotely possible the teens assaulted the man first, he successfully defended himself and just went home. He may not have reported it because Japan is not exactly kind to people who fight back.
For example, lets assume for a moment that they were harrassing him for fun with no plan to actually even touch him. The man does not know that. Even the kids might change their mind in the heat of the moment. So he pokes at them with his umbrella.
I think the odds are greater that the story is true as reported. But lets not be fools. There are plenty of 14 year old punks who would abuse our trust.
vctokyo
gees this is happening too often ..the kids in japan have it pretty bad..first knife, then kicked, now umbrella... next maybe a manga magazine thrown at them..

Okinawamike: Any relation to Okimike from the child assault post yesterday? Sure doesn't sound like it, given your stance. I agree with you -- while there are plenty of times I've wanted to shout at some fools playing on the train, blocking exits/entrances, or just goofing about (and not only kids, either), given that I'm a rational person and capable of containing those feelings and not exploding I do just that... keep it in check.
I really can't understand what men like this guy, or people who assault kids for the dumbest if any reasons.... do they understand that prison is not some bliss designed for their comfort and their lives will be a whole lot worse for their lack of momentary restraint? I hope they find the guy and he is charged. I don't know what kind of sentence he would get, but at least he would have to face the family and apologize, pay compensation, etc. I have no doubt he ran off, knowing what he did was wrong.
Okinawamike
There might be such extenuating circumstances....
Ya, like the ten seconds for a kid making to much noise as they walk past you, that you must lose your mind?
kansaifun
Just to play devil's advocate, I have wanted to poke many loud, obnoxious students on the train....
There might be such extenuating circumstances....

There are too many bizarre stories like this in Japan
