Man attacks 3 children in stabbing spree on Tokyo street

A man who allegedly attacked three elementary school children in broad daylight on a Tokyo street was being held by police on Friday, reports said.

The three children -- two aged six and one aged seven -- received cuts to their neck and arms during the attack outside Oizumi Daiichi Elementary School in Nerima Ward at around 1:40 p.m., Japan's public broadcaster NHK said. None of the victims were seriously hurt, the broadcaster said.

The attacker got into a blue car and drove away, witnesses said. School officials took note of the car's license plate, while a woman driving near the scene followed the car and alerted police.

Police said a 47-year-old man was arrested in Miyoshi, Saitama Prefecture, 10 kilometers away, at around 2:20 p.m. NHK said the man was detained after being spotted in his car which matched the description of the blue car in which the attacker fled.

Police said the man had two knives in the car but he has denied attacking the children. He has a record of psychiatric treatment, a police official said.

Unforgivable. So glad the kids were not more seriously injured...even though they should not have been hurt at all. I know "hindsight" is a wonderful thing, but... was he not under supervision? It's so sad that this type of tragic event is happening more and more often across the globe. What is happening to us, as a species? He will get psychiatric attention (and locked up).... but what about the traumatic effects on those children.

The officials and the woman acted quickly, so they could find the attacker, good for them. Japanese culture should take their citizens with a psychiatric past more seriously, and offer better threatment. What if I get hurt someday too? What about my friends?

@hilldomain as for your comment about feeling bad for the criminal, I tend to as well but you should realize that it's uncommon for people such as ourselves to have the ability to look objectively at the situation like that- don't lose this important compassion but realize that others simply won't have the capacity to see it as you do. It's like they hit a mental roof where it's always simply victim = our side, perpetrator = bad guys.

Although it's true that the kids start walking home at a very young age, this could really happen to anyone at any age, and as long as you're the smaller one/ the one without a weapon, you're usually defenseless.

Doesnt anyone feel bad for the guy who did the stabbing? he is obviously sick. Society creates these people. Anyone can snap. There is no outlet for emotions in Japan and people just stuff it down then do irrational things. What is also insane is people look at this guy and think he is so different from them and that they would never do something like this. God forbid but obviously the guy is not rational or sane.

Kids are forced to walk home alone from school to encourage independence. How naive. Japanese people need to live in this century its not 1950. The school department should be blamed for their negligence. Just too innocent I guess. I don't trust any of them, very sweet but down right stupid as far as common sense goes.

My daughter is 5 and next year she will be in shogakko and I will be walking her home as I always do. We live in Suginami, 10 minutes from Nerima. Honestly I worry more about older kids doing stupid things than creepy insane guys.

Always Saitama or Chiba!!!! Whats wrong with this people!!!

Yet they are still safer than the safest city in your country.

"Police said a 47-year-old man was arrested in Miyoshi, Saitama Prefecture." His surname is "Omi" per NHK. He is not a minor so his name should be front-and-center.

I agree

whiskeysour,

If I seen this guy, I would try to hit him with my car not to kill him but to knock him down...

If i seen this guy i would have broke his legs....

Yeah, yeah, yeah - woulda coulda shoulda.

You got your concepts messed up. First you say he's a nut (which I believe he is) only to then call him a "coward" "picking on" defenseless kids. So which is it? This guy is mentally ill or just a mean mother who's out to hurt people or "pick on" them? I love how all you vengeful souls only have the ability to see as far as the screen in front of you, feeling the need to have this loon roughed up by police or by your imaginary vigilante posse. Well that shit doesn't belong in a society with laws.

Again, reactuve solutions like this is missing the point. A proactive attitude is what's needed in this country. Mentally ill people need to be dealt with so that they get treatment or help to not commit horrible crimes like these. Instead of just putting the lid on everything "shameful" or "embarassing" like Japan does now, they need to grow the F up and realize that sometimes people need help.

I hope this guy gets the psychiatric treatment that is so clearly missing from his life - preferably in a secure facility.

The Excuse of being deranged needs to be removed from all legal systems. People who harm other people especially children have no right to continue. Either they should be locked away or sumarily executed. End of story. There is not tolerance or should be for violence and our permissive modern attitude is allowing terrible things to continue. Even if he is a nut case and it is clear he is at least that, he would have been deterred if he knew that he would be executed immediately for such a crime. Terrible to hear but i am very glad the kids are ok.

What's this undercurrent of suggesting Saitama is a hot bed for nutters in this thread?!

I bet you'd all struggle to find any evidence to support that argument.

Honest Dictator- Totally undwerstand what your coming from buttttttttt Crazy is crazy and you can't stop a nut from going on a rampage... This guy is beyond reasoning or beyond psychological counseling !!!!! The U.S. is a police state, but japan is less dangerous because of no guns. Wow ! If this guy had a gun with unlimited bullets...

These cowards pick on defenseless kids... If I seen this guy, I would try to hit him with my car not to kill him but to knock him down...

I used to work at several Elementary schools... I used to greet kids in the morning and hang around playing games and visiting their clubs after school when I was an ALT. If a kid came up to me after school and wanted to play some kind of game I would hang around with that kid.

I liked being a ALT but the salary was terrible... I can't do that again. But I enjoyed hanging around the kids before and after school.

I hate this cowards that prey and hurt kids.

If i seen this guy i would have broke his legs....

Hahahaha, probably I would have been arrested for assaulting this perp... But the kids are far more worth it..

Thank God the little children survived !

One thing I like about the police in the US is that they look intimidating and athaurative. Its not good if they're a bad officer, but its great if they're a good law enforcer. When I was in Hong Kong the law enforcement also had presence to let criminals know to straighten up or they'd get hauled in. In Japan... they need more presence and less embarrassment as well as stricter admission rules as to who qualifies to become a police officer. Great ethical sense, a desire to help and protect the countries citizens, and a desire to uphold the countries laws (which in Japan also need some work).

Typical coward, attacking children.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Miyoshi, Saitama Prefecture

If this keeps up kids will need to start wearing kevlar (aramid) clothing. => Durable enough for kids, strong enough to fend off knife-wielding attackers.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Its not clear from the news that why he undergone a psychiatric treatment. Instead of finding the reason or motive behind attack we are criticizing him, not good!!

The attacker got into a blue car and drove away

He hold a driving license in JAPAN, this indicate he has patience, He love blue color (Car), which indicates he is conservative, reliable and trustworthy and he needs peace and harmony in his everyday life.

None of the victims were seriously hurt,

His intention was not to hurt anyone badly, he did the act to attract peoples attention toward him.

Police said the man had two knives in the car

Yes, One used for chopping vegetables and second one is a fruit knife, nothing wrong in it.

There are some missing info like is he married? divorced? unemployed? no girlfriend?

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Sure you do. Until you get roughed up for whatever arbitrary reason.

Arbitrary? Whatever else my emotion reaction was, hoping a man that stabbed three children felt some pain himself either during or after being arrested is hardly arbitrary.

Police said the man had two knives in the car but he has denied attacking the children. He has a record of psychiatric treatment, a police official said.

Obviously a disturbed individual, it is a shame the psychiatric treatment he received did not help him.

whats with the kids hate crime lately? this is getting nuts.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Another nutter.

Just reading an update on this and it said that a woman in a car saw the commotion and when the guy drove off she followed him, conveying his details to the police. This explains why they were able to catch the perp in record time, around 50 mins later. When they caught him, alone in his car near a conbini, they found one (or more) 'fruit knife' type blades and arrested him on contravention of the 'Jutoho', Swords and Firearms Law.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I feel a bit guilty for saying so, but I hope is not only being held by the police, but also roughed up by them as well.

Sure you do. Until you get roughed up for whatever arbitrary reason.

Hope the guy will be removed from society permanently.

Sure you do. Because we all know how much safer that makes society.

Hope the guy will be removed from society permanently.

Sadly, he won't be.

Wow so glad these children survived. Hope the guy will be removed from society permanently.

There is a need for heightened security in elementary schools.

"3 sets of parents who don't want their kids walking home without an adult every day from now on"

Just 3? More likely most parents of that school!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

was being held by police on Friday

I feel a bit guilty for saying so, but I hope is not only being held by the police, but also roughed up by them as well.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

What a coward! There are no words to describe this low life!

Even without serious injuries, this attack is definitely traumatizing. I hope all the kids attacked heal the best way possible and that they can leave today behind.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

why don't these people just kill themselves instead of trying to kill other people?!

9 ( +9 / -0 )

That attack happened in Tokyo, not Saitama.

but he may be from Saitama...

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Watching live on the news now, and there is a lot of news coverage of this attack. I have to give THANKS to the police on doing a great job this time. Kawagoe is very far, almost 40 km from Nerima.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

That attack happened in Tokyo, not Saitama.

Glad the kids weren't seriously hurt in any case.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Thank goodness the poor, innocent kids weren't killed. This trauma could damage them for a long time. Let's just hope the maniac who did these acts of cowardice is locked up FOREVER.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

There are 3 more kids going to bed for the next few years or more asking "why in the world did this happen to me??" And 3 sets of parents who don't want their kids walking home without an adult every day from now on.

Needless, unpredictable violence.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Is there no end to this crap? Glad the kids were not killed, but as far as not being seriously injured goes, I am sure the emotional scars will take a lot longer to heal than the physical ones.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

This happened in Tokyo and he fled to Saitama.
