Man attacks emergency rescue team workers, steals ambulance

Police said Saturday they have arrested a man from Osakasayama for attacking emergency rescue team workers and stealing their ambulance.

Emergency services received a call from a member of the public on Friday at around 10:30 p.m., Fuji TV reported. According to police, the 46-year-old man told the emergency operator that his son looked sick and requested an emergency vehicle.

When the three-man crew arrived at the man's house, he allegedly became aggravated and attacked the emergency rescue team workers with a guitar and kicked them. Two of the crew sustained minor injuries in the attack, Fuji reported.

The man then got into the ambulance that had been left outside and fled the scene. Police say the man activated the vehicle's siren and emergency lights before driving through traffic and clipping vehicles waiting at stop signals before reaching an expressway.

Police say the man continued along the expressway until he reached Wakayama Prefecture, where he was apprehended and arrested. The chase lasted for approximately one hour and 20 minutes, Fuji reported.

A spokesman for the Osakasayama emergency services department was quoted as saying that the crew's safety is the primary concern, and if they were in danger, they should not be blamed for not staying with the vehicle.

Still doesn't beat the time that dude scared the police away and stole their car. That one made CNN as a comedy piece, much to the shagrin of the Japanese public.

"i would understand if it was a knife; but a guitar, c'mon."

Well, maybe it was a steel string guitar.

This is funniest crime story I've in years, which it would not have been had someone gotten hurt. Emergency crews really do need to be ready for unexpected violence when they get a call.

In this case, maybe the emergency could have defused this obviously insane man by asking him to play something on the guitar and then sing along with him.

Wow ! Maybe this guy was a wacko 'gamer' - had just finished playing Guitar Hero and fancied a go on Grand Theft Auto !? How many more weirdos are going to go off on one... especially with an abundance of 2012 doom prophets ?

three-man crew cant take down a man holding a guitar?

You ever been hit with a guitar?

I wonder what's next on this nut's bucket list, a patrol car?

This article sure seems incomplete.

If it was an electric guitar, I am surprised the injuries were not worse. A lot of mass in a solid body guitar construction. I have been waiting for someone to comment on how electric guitars are sometimes called "axes". Would have made the headlines more lurid I guess....

"The chase lasted for approximately one hour and 20 minutes, Fuji reported."

Did he wear a helmet while driving and slow down for lights??

...Yeah except for the people in the way of "The chase lasted for approximately one hour and 20 minutes, Fuji reported."

Oh yeah.... and the sick kid....

Sick...

Hilarious....

He must have been al strung out or something. He followed his own tune.

Well, at least this nut case will be able to play with his imaginary guitar and friends BEHIND BARS for a LONG, LONG TIME!

Maybe the paramedics thought the kid wasn't really very sick and suggested the father play a few soothing tunes to his son on the guitar to make him feel better? Just maybe....!

This is one of the weirdest stories I've seen, and there's nothing about the reason for this guy going on his guitar wielding, ambulance joy ride other than he became "aggravated." C-R-A-Z-Y.

Perhaps clipping the cars was due to pretty much all Japanese drivers not moving out of the way for emergency vehicles? (I wonder if people ever regret that as they lie dying in the back of an ambulance that's crawling through traffic...)

quite entertaining (!)

"Son" = sick in the head 46 year old man.

The man then got into the ambulance that had been left outside

It's a good thing they left the ambulance outside as most Japanese homes are too crowded to accommodate a car, too.

And, yeah, what happened to the son, if there ever was a son?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

So had he planned from the beginning to steal an ambulance, or was his son actually sick, and if so, what happened to the boy?? Was there even a son at the scene in the first place?

Wow! The nuts are blooming early this year!
