Man attempts suicide after police find mother's corpse hidden in vacuum bag

Police in Nagoya said Friday they have arrested a man for dumping the body of his deceased mother.

The man, who has been identified as 44-year-old Yuji Shibata, was arrested Thursday after it was revealed that in May of last year, he had placed his mother's corpse in a duvet vacuum storage bag and hidden it in their home, TV Asahi reported.

According to police, the body was found by some of the woman's relatives, with the assistance of officers. At the time of the discovery, police say Shibata had gone to another room and slashed both of his wrists. Police say he lost consciousness at the scene, but his injuries are not life-threatening, TV Asahi reported.

Police say that Shibata has confessed to illegally dumping his mother's body and that an investigation is to be carried out into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Moms dies naturally, loser son wants her pension check... Make him pay it all back. Huge problem in Japan with not reporting deaths do family can collect pensions. You want the cash?! Show you're alive ever year. Failure to do that?! The checks stop.

Immediately thought of my vacuum cleaner bag which is about the size of a grapefruit...

Vacuum bags are really small. How could she fit in one?

The vacuum storage bags come in large sizes, big enough to a duvet in. Or a body.

What is a Duvet?

Does your computer have no dictionary?

@Yubaru, after first glance of this story, the first thought from my mind was the son collecting on the pension. The story does not say it directly, but I suspect the 44 year old Shibata was living at home with Mother and did not want to leave the easy living. Either way, RIP to the mother. It is not an honorable way to be remembered to be stuffed into a vacuum staorage bag instead of a family tomb.

Yes, I went 'Eh!?' the first time I read the headline too.

I also thought it meant vacuum cleaner bag by the headlines....should have included the "storage". RIP (but the mother should have kicked him out long ago)

Now I got it! Thought he was cleaning house, but he was just organizing.

Am I the only one that thinks this must be some sort of monster vacuum cleaner?

she was in a plastic bag not in a vacuum cleaner.

Ah, after reading it again, I noticed it's a vacuum storage bag. Need glasses...

Am I the only one that thinks this must be some sort of monster vacuum cleaner? I mean, the mother couldn't have been that small.

Abandoning and dumping corpses sure happens a lot in Japan.

Partly because when it comes to the elderly family members will continue to collect pension benefits. Other reasons are funeral costs, as noted earlier, estate taxes, and probably plain ol' stupidity.

Sweet lord... I mean, once your dead your dead, and I personally don't care if I'm buried, or cremated and have my ashes tossed away somewhere, but putting your own relative in a vacuum bag and hiding it in the house? This is just plain sick.

in the name of the Yak, the keystone and the holy shinto....may it rest in peace...

Maybe she was getting a monthly income check...common...

JAPAN... do yourself a favor and issue social security numbers. Clever JT readers will understand (motive)...

Now thatis criminal !

If a relative dies from natural causes, what makes a person hide them in a vacuum bag !?

The cost of the funeral.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

His was a suicidal gesture, not an attempt. If the house was full of people (including police), and he stepped into the next room to cut his wrists, he was expecting to be saved. That's why its a "gesture". If he really wanted to kill himself, he could have jumped in front of a train like so many others.

oops, another spelling mistake
