Man chokes woman, steals her bag

A 24-year-old woman was attacked by a man who choked her and then stole her handbag as she walked home in Tokyo's Kita Ward on Saturday night.

Police quoted the woman as saying she was along the street in Ukima at around 9 p.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and started choking her, TV Asahi reported. The man grabbed her handbag, containing about 5,000 yen in cash, and ran away.

The woman was shaken but not injured, police said, adding they are studying street surveillance camera footage to try and identify the man.

Keep your wits about you ladies! You don't have to worry if you are guy though cos these are cowardly thugs that will only attack the defenceless.

A male can be just as defenceless as a female. Don't be daft.

This is starting to happen pretty often in Tokyo and other parts of Japan. Keep your wits about you ladies! You don't have to worry if you are guy though cos these are cowardly thugs that will only attack the defenceless.

"Japan is not safe anymore." Coming from an American, I would definitely disagree with that statement. By comparison In 2012, an estimated 1,214,462 violent crimes occurred in the US. Out of all my years in Tokyo, I have never once felt unsafe. This is an unfortunate occurance but petty by comparison. It is so rare and unusual, that a purse snatching incedent actually makes the top five news stories in Japan.

For all those girls walking home alone at night, have your phone open ready to hit 110. Or in the least, pretend like your talking to someone on the phone. And take frequent look backs to see if anyone suspicious approaching.

Japan is not safety country any more. and not just for weird pervy petty crimes but this type of outrage.

@StormR

Why deflect where the incident happened yes the crime could have happened anywhere in the world but keep the spot light on where the crime happened instead of acting as if its a rare occurrence its starting to happen quiet often and people especially women need to know

Yes, and many of the articles in the crime section are about Tokyo. Something for people to learn from before they go on to attack Saitama,

What a jerk.... but its true Japan is not as safe as it used to be.

The poor in Japan are getting desperate - the taxes are increasing, and minimum wage is not enough to support yourself and your family, it is inevitable that these things will increase.

The only reason this mugging made the press was because she was choked in the process. "normal" mugging happens every day.

Street robbery still fairly rare here compared with lots of other places, and how's the form of this mug in the article, jeopardises everything for a messily 5,000yen.

If you are going to do a robbery atleast do a decent one, make the jail time worth while.

5,000yen hahaha L O S E R ! !

So why is it that we don't hear about guys being choked about having their bags stolen ? ?

IN GENERAL, women who walk alone are often targeted by muggers - denying that is as daft as the comment that you left.
