Police on Thursday were searching for a man who allegedly assaulted a 27-year-old woman in a parking lot in the Kabukicho district in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The woman told police she met the man on a dating app and that he told her he was British.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Fuji TV reported. The woman, who is from Asaka, Saitama, met the man through the dating app with another 29-year-old woman.

As she and the man were walking, they got into a quarrel and he hit her in the face. The man grabbed her handbag and ran away.

Police said the woman suffered light injuries to her face and hands.

On the dating app, the man claims to be British. He appears to be in his 30s, is about 180 centimeters tall. He was last seen wearing black pants and a black jacket.

Just to make sure we don't miss this most vital part of the story, they kindly mention that he may be British three times.

I suppose it's easy to miss this in reading the article... but apparently the guy was British.

@Toasted Heretic: "And British. Apparently."

How do you figure that?

@Joe Yan "I think on tinder there are group hangouts. I think they were arguing about whether to do a threesome or add another to make it a foursome."

Pray tell how you are privy to this information? Did you happen to be there???

By the way did the article mention this guy's nationality?

I never heard of a dating app where you can set up a threesome. In any case, how the hellll do you get in an argument within a few minutes of just meeting. If something was untoward I would just walk away.

No mention of which dating app. Wonder which one, given that he is, apparently, British and she is Japanese.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

'claims to be British ' perhaps he IS British. I've seen them do bad things to girls here, Nampa, assault, rape, it's on the news.. End of the day, good and bad in all cultures, don't need to whitewash or hide the truth under the rug

Seriously, though. Hope he gets caught.

The last place on earth that I would meet a woman on a date would be kabukicho.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

To get into a quarrel so quick after meeting in Kabukicho through a dating app seems suspicious. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a pay for play, and somebody wanted to renegotiate the arrangement.

It's quite rare for a British person to describes themselves as British - they will use Scottish, Welsh, English, Irish.

Irish people don't describe themselves as British.

Not being precious but genuinely curious to know why my comment got downvoted

I assume your opinions send certain types over the rails, so they downvote whatever you say. I will get downvotes on the most benign and helpful comments, so that's really the only explanation I can think of.

So far as Brits, too many people still think that refers to fair haired people from Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland. Quite a few Brits who hail from South Asia, for example, are happy to call themselves British. I'm not saying that's who this person was, as I have always found Britain to have more than its share of violent people.

What an idiot...

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It's a very random scenario.

They meet up for a date, get into an argument, so he hits her and steals her bag?

Either that's bad reporting or someone is exaggerating.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Updated on a news flash... he was claiming to be British!

Fair enough, it's not a popularity contest, it's just I'm curious. Of course, there are some in the 6 counties/NI of the Unionist tradition who would say they are British - and even a few who would say that even then, they are also Irish. Then there's some of that tradition, who would say Ulster is part of the UK - conveniently ignoring the fact that there are 9 counties in Ulster, 3 of them are in the Republic. Quite confusing to those who are not overtly familiar with Ireland (north and south).

I'm not saying that's who this person was, as I have always found Britain to have more than its share of violent people.

Like most countries, sure. I think the emphasis on the perp's nationality or claimed nationality may have been overkill but, again, this element is played up in most other countries too. The "other" or the "foreigner" was responsible for a crime, and this must be highlighted by certain news outlets, playing into the hands of those who see all foreigners as dodgy gurriers.

Thanks for taking the time, commanteer.

If this is indeed the guy from the app, he is an absolute genius. And he has the local perp-fashion down cold.

And British. Apparently.

Don't worry, in a couple of months' time, the good ladies of Japan will have the simple task of checking for a blue passport. Printed in France, of course.

Slapped in the face and her handbag robbed. Poor thing. Not exactly a good advert for online dating, is it?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Probably took one look at him and said "Hey, you have black hair so you're not british" or something like that

When it comes to meeting people how about if we just do things the old fashion way and meet them in person.  Stay off those Dating Apps cause you never know who your really actually communicating with.

Their has been numerous crimes committed by people who met on Dating Apps.

“The man grabbed her handbag and ran away.”

That makes it sound like he got away with her handbag. But all the Japanese accounts I’ve seen (about five) say he tried but failed to take it. Strangely, none of them mentioned the other woman either.

Wow! Where was he from?

Lots of British citizens call themselves British, and they or their parents come from all parts of the world.

Next time I meet any Japanese girl reluctant to go out w the gaijin, I will make sure I tell them I am definitely and absolutely NOT British...maybe wearing a t-shirt with it printed on will be useful xD

If I was a woman meeting a foreign guy on a dating app for the first time, I might bring my female friend along, just to feel safe and get her trusted opinion on the guy.

In this case the perp may have taken exception to the unwanted third party.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

as I know, 3somer is the first dating app for threesome.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I actually doubt that he was British.

@Fred Hunt: judging by the comments I am guessing this guy was British.

Regarding dating apps, if you want to go fast it's tinder, if you want to go Han Solo speed of light it's Grinder.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I think if the perp was Irish he might theoretically identify himself as British to mislead the alleged victims. As another example, if I was in a country that had a lot of friction with the US, I might say I am Canadian to avoid the friction.

Threesome!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Not being precious but genuinely curious to know why my comment got downvoted, perhaps someone could explain to the rest of us why you think Irish people don't describe themselves as British?

There's nothing wrong with being British, obviously, in case I have to clarify.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Sounds to me like she asked him for money, he paid, then she refused to do whatever he wanted, so he grabbed her bag.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

The only dating app I know of that could allow this would be "AdultFriendFinder" 's... used to be great, but now a days, dorks like this person, are really are annoying. I feel sorry for her and, it simply going to make it harder for others to date... yet another horror story to put a nail into the Japan Dating app scene.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I don't believe the guy was British. British men are gentlemen, they would NEVER hit a woman in the face and grab her handbag!
