According to police, the man, who has been identified as 32-year-old Takafumi Okunuki, was shirtless and screaming as his car plow through the glass front of the police station at around 1:25 p.m. Automatic front doors and pillars at the entrance to the police station were damaged in the collision and one 77-year-old man sustained a cut finger caused by falling glass.

Police arrested Okunuki for property damage at the scene and were questioning him, when he suddenly lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 5:35 p.m. Police said that there were no irregularities or problems during their questioning and that Okukuni's personal safety was not put at risk.

An autopsy will be carried out to establish the exact cause of his death.

This is so true! People just drop dead all the time!

When the Japanese snap....they sure do snap.

i can only think that it had to be a prior condition or he sustained severe head trauma during the crash. So if the police arrested him that mean they put him in handcuffs and got him out the car right? which could mean that they may have unintentionally caused his death. Generally you dont move a person injured in a car accident unless they are in immanent danger right? I'm no doctor but suddenly losing consciousness is connected to head trauma right?

If he was driving slower, the automatic doors would have open, and he would have hit the front desk. If he was screaming and shirtless, possibly PPC?

PCP dog.

Why are so many people in Tochigi crashing their cars in horrendous ways recently?

NDGOVENOM: My guess is trauma, either to the head or perhaps the chest resulting in internal hemorrhaging. He could have slammed into the steering wheel upper body first, as he was not likely wearing a seat belt. Anyway, I doubt they'll be a follow-up story so unless we bother to look it up in Japanese papers we won't find out.

Just checked the J news. After crashing his mini car into the P station, he climbed out shirtless and screaming gibberish, it is reported. The Police insist there were no problems with the way they restrained him and cuffed him.

Police arrested Okunuki for property damage at the scene and were questioning him, when he suddenly lost consciousness... Due to a phone book over his crust no doubt. Bet they haven't got this "questioning" on video.

NDGOVENOM, unntentionaly caused his death? Why blamed police and make excuses for someone who was intent on killing that day. Obviously, you never considered this crazy man's actions as an attempted murder. So what, he is dead. Saved tax dollars, the cost of a trial to put him away for many years at your country's expense.

Good riddance

I would say either it was a suicide or he thought it was a drive-thru police station. No shirt to me rules out sudden serious illness while driving. Messed up either way.

They should have just shot him ..... nevermind, they would have used up all their ammunition before somebody would have actually hit him at point-blank range!

No shirt and screaming suggests certain substances to me.

well, I can certainly ascertain that both drugs and alcohol have rendered me unconscious and I awoke with no head trauma that "hair of the dog" or aspirin couldn't fix.

This story reminds me of a scene from The Terminator when Arnie crashed his car into a police station and took out almost every officer there.

Something doesn't add up here. I'd like to know what happened after he crashed the car into the station - was he taken out the back and "interrogated" by any chance? Was the old telephone-book-up-the-jumper interrogation technique used? I wonder if this is all captured on CCTV?

Epic Fail

Do they give Darwin awards in Japan? This guy is certainly in the running.

I imagine that the DOA was caused by injuries sustained in the crash. The only question is, should the cops have taken the guy to hospital first and questioned later? Seems a little odd to just move him to an interrogation room without medical attention.

"Police said that there were no problems or irregularities during their questioning and that Okukuni's personal safety was not put at risk."

That means he wasn't beaten during the questioning.

I felt like doing this after they busted me for failure to come to a complete stop. Meanwhile 140 million are allowed to freely run red lights.
