Mr Kipling
Something is not quite right with this story. Actually, everything is not quite right. 74, eight ex wives...???
falseflagsteve
Poly WTF! Weirdos, these hippy types need to be in a nut house or banged up with some proper villains to learn their lessons. Just keep them away from vulnerable people, vermin.
Haaa Nemui
Not the story that’s not quite right. It’s the old guy and his ex wives still living with him that are not quite right. Man that’s a sign to keep away if ever there was one.
girl_in_tokyo
That's not polyamory - that's a harem, and this man sounds like an abuser and a pedophile.
Stewie
The man has Eight ex wives ?. Apparently a gluton for punishment. One wife is often one too many.

Shibuya was arrested Tuesday in connection with an incident that took place on Dec 12 last year at his home in Higashiyamato, west Tokyo where he lives with his current wife and eight of his ex-wives, including Chiaki, as well as three children, investigators said
Shibuya then told the girl that she "would be abducted by aliens" unless she entered into a relationship with him.
Just when you thought the news couldn't get anymore downright BIZZARE....
Desert Tortoise
May be true but ask yourself why the eight ex wives stick around? That to me is even more inexplicable.
John
is brainwashing a crime? I don’t see any crime and I don’t see why he is arrested. According to the article, he was not married all of them at the same time. Is it a crime if he is living together with other women? He does seem to be a weird guy and It sounds like women love weirdoes. It’s not a crime if many women wanting to live with him and one of them is even helping him to get another woman. These women sound mentally sick and this guy is reducing chance of normal men meeting sick women. He is helping the society by keeping so many mentally ill women at his place.
Larry Lacky
Wow, this is crazy. 8 ex wives? Like some kind of cult maybe??
NOMINATION
Sounds more like a sex cult like on some R. Kelly type of thing and hopefully more victims like this girl come out to put this guy away for the rest of his life. However, sex crimes get measly sentences here in Japan.
Mark
Unbelievable, Some are still living in the stone age.

Hahahaha, yeah, because husbands are never the problematic ones in a relationship, amirite?

Yes, it is.
Because grooming an adolescent girl for sex is a crime. It is pedophilia.
He is only married to one of them. He was actually arrested for polygamy a number of years ago, so divorced 7 of his wives but continued to live with them.
No, women do not "love weirdos".
You seem to think the man is normal while the women are sick. I think that is a very biased point of view.
Gaijinjland
A lot of women will run if there is even one ex wife in the picture/ background. Jeez. He was arrested for trying to commit “forcible sexual intercourse”. So he was arrested for attempted rape? Why not just write that?
RKL
he lives with his current wife and eight of his ex-wives, including Chiaki,
Gotta give credit where it's due.
shogun36
If that isn't the description of a GOOD TIME, I don't know what is............
PharaohChromium
Ha! Isn't one wife enough?
commanteer
Yes on the first point. No on the second. By definition, pedophilia is an attraction to pre-pubescents, which would exclude most adolescents.
So they say. And yet...
Rodney
Using pictures of aliens to seduce women is a new one on me.
purple_depressed_bacon
Call it what it is actually is: rape. This man and his ex-wife attempted to rape the girl and should be labeled as would-be rapists.
Antiquesaving
Actually this is "grooming", the sad thing is that on YouTube and within a certain community grooming children has become the norm.
And even when exposed nothing is done because the community jumps right in to claim discrimination.
But don't worry in a few more years a new letter to the group will be added and the behaviour protected.
commanteer
Because there are actual pedophiles out there - and those crimes are another level of evil. By overusing the term you dilute the meaning.
Maybe. You say women don't love weirdos, but there are nine women in this article alone that would appear to contradict that. What women say they want in a man is probably one of the least accurate ways of knowing what they actually want. Like some people say they like only natural and organic vegetable-based foods, but are always happy to sneak in a Big Mac.
starpunk
There's been another sex cult with a very bizarre name that was broken up recently. It had Catherine Oxenburg's daughter as a victim. And let's not forget Epstein.
Lindsay
he lives with his current wife and eight of his ex-wives, including Chiaki, as well as three children,
I can’t think of anything to say to this.

@girl_in_tokyo
don't always agree with you, but on all you wrote on all the above.... absolutely!

AntiquesavingToday 02:04 pm JST
No, it hasn't.
Being out and not hiding one's sexual preference is NOT grooming. This kind of rhetoric is perpetuating lies, and nothing more.

commanteerToday 02:31 pm JST
No. Using pedophile as an umbrella term for the grooming of all underage girls is not "diluting the term" because it's being used semantically in the exact same way.
Do you now what diluting the term really is? It's when people like Antiqusaving up there decides that "grooming" means anything the right wing wants it to mean as long as they can use it to attack people who aren't cisgender and straight. Get mad at him, not me.
Nine women don't represent the sum total of all women. That's now how statistics work.
Right, and I suppose this doesn't apply to men, because it's only women who don't know what they want and sometimes change their minds or are inconsistent. Like, men never get a woman pregnant, tell her he wants her to keep the baby, and then leaves. Or men don't tell several women that he wants monogamy while sleeping with them all. As if people aren't just people, all of us flawed, all of us searching, until we figure ourselves out.

*a crime that takes advantage of a victim when they are unconscious or* in no state to resist
Well, that sounds like an ambiguous bar to hurdle.

Because grooming an adolescent girl for sex is a crime. It is pedophilia.
Not necessarily, because adolescents can be up to 19 years old.
Pedophilia is a sexual attraction to prepubescent children.

It's not at all ambiguous. Would you give a cup of tea to someone who was asleep, unconscious, or who just hadn't asked for one? If not, then why would you think it's okay to try to have sex with someone under those same circumstances?
Semantically similar words that also have the same illocutionary force can be substituted for one another with the same effect. If you do not understand what those big words mean, I suggest a dictionary.
Antiquesaving
Now who gave you the right to label us with cisgender?
If we use the F word for homosexual men or the other T word for transgender you get very offended because you did not chose those words.
I know very few heterosexual people that chose cisgender the world Heterosexual exist for a reason use it.
Yes I know it bothers you but sorry that is the word.
Antiquesaving
In 1981 I was part of the first pride parades organization in Montreal.
The goal was to show how it was normal to be homosexual and to LOVE who you wanted.
Today it is a freak show not because of loving homosexual couples with their children and families (they now stay away) but because of the radicals that have hijacked the organization.
Sex toys, things, drag, explicit images and clothing.
Imagine the St Patrick's parade was taken over by heterosexual couples walking down in leather and S&M bondage stuff.
Well that is the state of the LGBTQIA+ movement today.
It is anything goes If we say so.
wallace
The Alphabet goes A-Z and everyone between.
Transsexuals are never a "freak show" claimed by some misguided posters.
kaimycahl
Everyone involved with that guy have serious issues. Shibuya must have a "magic wand" or giving them magic mushrooms. Living with his current wife, eight of his ex-wives, including Chiaki, an three children! WOW those kids must be going through some horrific times.
WilliB
I saw this guy on the news, and he looks like an alien himself. Spooky! Amazing to think he managed to brainwash all these women, but then again people believe the mainstream news, so much for gullability...
Desert Tortoise
His crime this time was attempting to molest an underage girl.
starpunk
This creepo already was convicted in 2006 for trying to force a woman to join his sex cult. That should've been a red flag right from the start.
Desert Tortoise
The article doesn't specify an exact age but says the girl he was trying to have sex with was "adolescent". That could be age ten through 18 or 19. In most places a girl under the age of 18 is a considered a minor child under the law and an adult having sex with a minor child is generally classified as a pedophile.

Some people always pretend to be the best expert on everything and know everything like this guy!

I wouldn't give a cup of tea to someone who was asleep--they might choke. But I would give a cup of tea to someone who hadn't asked for one--just to be polite and hospitable.
commanteer
Maybe by you personally, but not by anyone who knows the standard English definition of pedophile or by any medical, legal or psychiatric professionals.
Kazuaki Shimazaki
Honestly, by itself I'm not sure. Because for an act to be a crime, it needs to be legislated as such. People that are sure it is a crime in Japan can remind me of its Article number in the Criminal Law or other law, because I don't remember seeing one.
Because that article number (177) used to be called rape (koukan).
In H29, more things (rectal and oral) were swept into the article's description, and to be more exact, the crime was renamed to Coerced (kyousei) Sexual Intercourse (seikou) and Analogs (tou).
To put a coin in it, he's defensibly correct. Besides, let's face it, we don't feel the same for every minor age:
Age 6: I can't even believe you can work yourself up on that.
Age 13: Yes, I get it, the bulges are coming out, I can see the attraction though I still like older than that ... but must resist bro!
Age 17: Is there really such a big difference between that and an adult?

No, I think you would offer them a cup of tea, and put it on the table in front of them - not pour it down their throat.

I missed in the article where it says the 74 year old guy tried to give a cup of tea to the sleeping girl.
That should never be allowed!

Well, its not all the men who file for divorces at a high rate. Its not all the men who go out looking for a rich man to mooch off of, marry him and then talk all his stuff. Women "NEVER" abuse their husbands or kill them, amirite?
RKL
The girl wasn't even touched by the guy.
He will get off scot free.
But interesting alien story.
Quite an imagination.
Wonder what was in her tea.
