2 men arrested for pushing man onto train tracks after argument

Police said Sunday they have arrested two men who allegedly pushed a 43-year-old man off the platform onto the tracks on Saturday morning at JR Oimachi Station in Tokyo.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. when one man got into an argument with two younger men, Sankei Shimbun quoted witnesses as saying.

Police said the man was pushed onto the tracks but was able to crawl beneath the platform just before the train arrived at the station. Police said he suffered a broken right wrist.

The two younger men fled from the scene in different directions, station staff said.

However, the pair turned themselves in late Saturday night at a police box in front of JR Kawasaki Station. Police identified them as Yuya Aikawa, 27, and Kento Segawa, 26, who both work at the same company.

After viewing surveillance camera footage of the incident, police were quoted as saying the two men will be charged with attempted murder, Sankei reported.

Police said that the pair had apparently been arguing with another passenger on the train and that the 43-year-old man, who was also on the train, had reprimanded them before the train arrived at Oimachi Station.

..............................

When someone does that kinda crap in front of me, whether it is a chikan or a few punks giving crap to another innocent bystander, I usually do or say something.......but that is me. The reason is, is that they are not only disrespecting the innocent bystander, they are also disrespecting me, by thinking that they can do that crap in front of me and that I won't do anything about it.

However, My rule, and the advice I give to anyone who wants to step up and do or say something is this.

"If you are not prepared to go all the way, to see the situation out to the end, and do what needs to be done, then you'd better just mind your own business or if possible seek out a cop or train staff if they are within voice distance."

What I mean by going all the way is this: If you tell those two punks to stop causing trouble(like in this story), that is fine but you need to be prepared if they, for example take it to the next level and tell you to go ' F yourself'.

Then what are you going to do?? You either walk away and look like an idiot and they continue what they were doing or you Must take it to the next next level and so on and so forth until the punks realize that it's not going their way and they back down. And again in this situation in this article, if they don't back down then you'd better by darn ready to get physical cause that's where this kinda situation is headed if neither side backs down or a cop or train staff is not around to help.

Again..this is another reason why I urge people to learn how to defend themselves. It may not only save you but it may just save an innocent bystander who needs help.

My 2 cents.

.........And to rebutt the OP's statement: ""but that clearly the act of doing so wasn't exactly profitable, was it.""

My answer to that is helping other people when in need has nothing to do with profit, it is a selfless act.

This is what happens when you don't mind your own business... Not saying he was wrong to reprimand them necessarily, but that clearly the act of doing so wasn't exactly profitable, was it.

I will always be grateful to the unknown strangers who didnt mind their own business and have helped me (and in one case quite possibly saved my life) over the years.

seems like he was pushed on the tracks while the train is coming according to the Japanese newspaper. Police already had the tapes and said it was an attempted murder.

The article has been changed, so no need to downvote the people who are responding to the original.

This is one reason why I'm torn to reprimand someone for doing something wrong here -- there are SO many stories of the people reprimanded flipping out and killing, or trying to kill, the person who simply points out that they are doing wrong.

Morry.

Not true, the last trains (yamanote, etc) are timed so that commuters can catch the last outbound train from shinjuku, shibuya, ikebukuro, etc.

That happens between 01:00-01:30AM on average. Maybe alcohol was involved can't say till further details. And the 2 guys would be quickly identified and arrested from available cameras. Heck the cops here got one programming that can identify you all it takes is you taking 3 steps in front of a camera. 96% accurate even without face.

Always turn around and look who's behind you as the train arrives. You know it makes sense.

In the States, U.K. Most of Europe, there's this thing called "Common Sense" especially when you are dealing with some of these nut-jobs walking the streets.. It's not worth anyone's time to try and argue with a nut-job, or as that expression goes,

"Mind your own business", "Common Sence", "Not argue with a fool" etc.... what a rich kit of Political Correctness to cover a plain cowardice ! When I was a kid I saw a scene inside a city bus. Two bullies began to harass and beat an old man. One of those young idiots turned to other passengers and warned "not to move". But people (old and young, not in good physical condition, by the way) jumped from their seats and begin to yell. People surrounded bullies. Hooligans released an old man and tried to argue with a crowd. One of them hit someone and it was a deadly mistake. In response the pair of hooligans got a dozen punches in faces, then they were grabbed and thrown out of bus like bags with sh!t..

People must be taught to act collectively in cases of emergency instead of stupid individualistic "mind your own business" or other similar cowardly crap.

Anyone beleive Alcohol played a role in this? I do, but besides that . Me personally, I would butt in If the pair that was harrasing the Other passanger were in the wrong. People argue all the time to which is none of my buisness, but when they get physical or I know the other party is In the wrong I will step in. I do what I can do to defuse the situation( without harming either parties) most resonable people would back down. Seeing that alcohol might be involved in this both parties might have not wanted to back down.

According to the news, the two assailants were drinking prior to the incident. So, it is very possible it did play a role.

Oh, but we should intervene...? Brilliant...!

...........................Speaking about out of context, did you even READ my posts??? I didn't say two guys arguing on the train...I said a Chikan or Punks hassling an innocent bystander. Then I WOULD interfere. I've been in Japan for 21 years good buddy. And I've seen it ALL on the trains. I know when to interfere and when to let a situation die down on it's own. No where in my posts did I say to escalate a situation that would die down on it's own. So I do agree with you there.

However....You and I seem to be cut from a different cloth my friend. Cause if a person truly needs help, I don't care if the Punk is one of your so called 'Nut Jobs', I'll take him down. That is what your so called 'intelligent and civilized person' would / should do, not turn tail and run just because the stranger may be a 'Nut Job'.

Enough said: Good luck buddy!

Readers, please stop bickering and do not be impolite toward one another.

@Chin4Sailor In the US that I know, there's a thing called "sticking up for what's right". In the cities I've lived in, the vast majority of people would've done the same thing and not let any unarmed punks like these get away with something like that, no matter how "trivial". I'd even go out on a limb and say most people would call someone "un-American" if they let any slight injustice slide by. To me, anyways, being an American means confronting any injustice you see, hence the mass protests over unjust acts by the government.

Do you seriously believe that?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Was it wrong to push him? Of course.

Should they be charged with attempted murder? Of course.

However, if you're by yourself, you might want to think twice about "reprimanding" somebody. At the very least, take a couple seconds to imagine the worst possible outcome, and take precautions to prevent it.

I'm not sure that assuming anybody you publicly reprimand will take it lying down is the safest behavior. Like it or not, you gotta watch your back at all times. Even in safety Japan.

My suggestion, if you clearly don't know the situation and who's to blame, then surely it is best to just mind your own business and walk away, or call the police. It is unfortunate that these two punks took it to the next level endangering someone's life. But I would say, I am like the Chronic and when someone is clearly in trouble or bullied for no reason, I step in and do whatever it takes to stop the injustice. I find shouting out loud in English usually throws most people off and they stop, I have rarely had to use force to take them down.

Scary incident. but wait it was 1 AM and hey it was not Saturday morning it was FRIDAY night so must be SAKE effect at one side.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

All of you self-righteous who replied to me, that old men wasn't try to save anyone, because noone was in danger. This article says it was just an argument and the old man felt the need to give his two cents.

Again, this is what happens when you don't mind your own business. Nobody needed saving but you. Someone may have tried to jump off the platform and risk their own life to save this man because of his foolishness.

Wrong Context Young Man... Walk Away from Trouble - Don't Escalate a Situation... No one is recommending anyone walk away from someone truly in need of help, but what intelligent and civilized people have learned, that it's sometimes, if not always best to avoid confrontation when you are dealing with complete strangers, that might possibly be Nut-Jobs!!!

But I've watched here in Japan, how many times, I can't count, where two male Japanese kids (20 -50's) will stand face to face arguing at the top of their lungs, like a game of chicken, waiting for the other person to walk away... What is this 8th grade mentality...? Happens everyday...

Yes... The 10,000 pound Elephant in the room! What have there been like 10 incidences in the past month..?

Especially here in Japan, and for those that make blanket these statements about doing the right thing, and helping others in need, they are NOT Mutually Exclusive, but you need to PICK and CHOOSE Your Fights (I.E... Time to make a stand), and if your going to argue with some nut-job over every single NIT-PICKY Thing they have here in Japan, then you are going to be Arguing, Fighting or getting pushed onto tracks 24/7...

Because there are literally thousands of things Japanese will pick an argument or confrontation over, just walk 200 meters down the street in Tokyo, and your almost guaranteed to have / hear some Oyaji or Ojisan saying something either about foreigners, or don't walk on this side of the side walk, or don't ride your bike here, or no chewing gum, no talking, or giving you the evil eye, etc, etc, etc...

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Again..this is another reason why I urge people to learn how to defend themselves. It may not only save you but it may just save an innocent bystander who needs help.

That's exactly what's wrong here now a days in Japan... You have too many people, intervening in trivial matters, that normally wouldn't amount to anything, but when they intervene, they escalate, like throwing gas on an open flame, instead of just letting it die out... Next thing you know, a guy is getting pushed onto the tracks... Probably over nothing...

In the States, U.K. Most of Europe, there's this thing called "Common Sense" especially when you are dealing with some of these nut-jobs walking the streets.. It's not worth anyone's time to try and argue with a nut-job, or as that expression goes, "No use Arguing with a Fool." It won't settle anything, and it just might get someone killed, if not seriously injured, when the best course of action , would have just been to walk away... I am so surprised, that there are so many Japanese people, that should know better, but are so entrenched as to throw caution to the wind just to make there point, at any cost... Didn't you people ever learn, Just walk away...? I guess not...

Stations are closed by 1 am. I've been to JR stations at 12:05 and they are closed.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

police were quoted as saying the two men will be charged with attempted murder

I would be highly surprised if they are indeed charged with attempted murder... Seeing how they are only 26 and 27 (relative juvenile's in Japan, probably still live at home with mom & dad) I would be they got off with an apology and 2 year suspended sentences... Any Taker's on that bet...?

apparently been arguing with another passenger on the train and that the 43-year-old man, who was also on the train, had reprimanded them before the train arrived at Oimachi Station.

Well, I certainly don't condone anyone's actions here, but sticking your nose into someone else's business will literally get you killed or very seriously injured in the other 67 Industrialized countries in the world... Sometimes Discretion is the better part of Valor.... Especially when deciding if to intervene in someone else's argument... Although Not Enough Facts here to determine what the situation really was...
