Man feigns death for 3 hours to avoid police questioning in Osaka

A 22-year-old man, who was arrested Wednesday night for assault and obstruction of duty after he rear-ended the motorcycle of a police officer, feigned death for about three hours, police said Thursday.

According to police, Yuji Matsumura of Sakai City was riding his motorcycle with some friends when he ran into the motorcycle of the police officer. He tried to escape but was apprehended about 400 meters from the crash.

Seconds after he was handcuffed, Matsumura collapsed and pretended to be dead. Police called for an ambulance even though his breathing and heartbeat were normal. Matsumura put on a good show, however, and didn't even flinch when medics inserted a catheter into his urethra. A doctor who performed a CT scan found no abnormalities.

This went on for three hours, police said, until Matsumura's mother came to the hospital to identify him. He returned to his senses at the sound of her voice.

Matsumura was quoted by police as saying: "I was tired, so I just went to sleep."

there are so many levels of this article that are hilarious

How could he have remained still when they inserted the catheter?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can see this one going all around the world on the classics TV specials.

GOLD!!!!

A much-welcomed addition to the crime section!! lol

This is something a 6 year old might do...

But unfortunately this is the mentality of the average 40 year old Japanese male, females have more common sense than to pull something so stupid.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, I suppose it was worth a try.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The police are pretty daft here, but even they can find a heartbeat... I think. Still, this is pretty classic.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

didn’t even flinch when medics inserted a catheter into his urethra.

He's a braver man than me, I'll give him that.

Why would they even need to stick a catheter up there in the first place? I bet it was just a threat to get him to wake up - "Ok, this looks serious, we'd better STICK THIS GIANT CATHETER UP HIS URETHRA"

my dog can play dead better

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Classic! Give this guy a job in entertainment. He has to be a better actor than most of these talentless "tarento"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

i agree with Altria, what the heck do they need to insert a catheter in there for???? He's only been down for 3 hours!

They should have played hardball and moved him to he MORGUE, and then see what happens when they put the buzzsaw a few inches from his head. Maybe it will look like Hostel 2.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A human opossum! Love it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I bet he would have flinched if some burly policemen put on the rubber glove and gave him a rectal exam...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How do they know he was pretending to be "dead"? Maybe he was pretending to "be at the office."

0 ( +0 / -0 )

He does know they don't give Oscars in jail, right?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Excellent!! It is now confirmed that Japanese can fall asleep at any possible moment and place. Like when driving and being arrested.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I dunno Tatanka... I'd take a rectal examination over a catheter up my urethra any day!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

inserted a catheter into his urethra

Why did they have to do that for a bike crash?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"be at the office"

LOL!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great ploy! What a legend. Give the guy some sort of prize!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great ploy but what was he thinking? That they would let him go if he was dead? That he would sneak out of the mortuary under cover of darkness?

Why did they have to do that for a bike crash?

Well, if I was a doctor and I thought the patient was faking that would be the first thing I would do!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Classic!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

funny!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That is hilarious but smart. It means the cops didn't have their way with him in the interrogation room, and pin a few other unsolved crimes on him, before him Mother turned up to save him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Pure gold.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

stupid J-cops. only good at checking bicycles and Alien cards!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why did they have to do that for a bike crash? Well, if I was a doctor and I thought the patient was faking that would be the first thing I would do!

So the guy now has legal grounds to sue...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Another prime example of the quality work Japan's police force provides to the community.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Had the catheter up the jolly ole willy and I'll be dammed if I know how anyone could feign death, sleep or even be quiet! Most unpleasant!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

" "Seconds after he was handcuffed, Matsumura collapsed and pretended to be dead. Police called for an ambulance even though his breathing and heartbeat were normal." "

If he pretended to be "dead" he should better than that. I think your writer ment to say he pretended to be "unconscious".

No?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Just another loser.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

didn’t even flinch when medics inserted a catheter into his urethra.

Solid GOLD! After that performance they should have shook his hand and let him go. Anyone feigning death and has the will power not to flinch should be given a pass. LOL

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maybe he did just fall asleep...... Cops aren't always right, you know. If he had been feigning death he would have confessed by now.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nothing a swift kick in the jewels wouldn't fix. That would have waken the little twit up, for sure! The really sad thing is, the cops played along with this little girl. They only had to cover his mouth and nose and he would have snapped out of it quick smart. I can't believe the garbage Japanese cops put up with. No wonder they are hopeless if they believe this kind of crap. Where I come from he would have dragged by his goolies into a cop car and allowed to examine the thickness of a phone book, very closely.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can't believe the garbage Japanese cops put up with

the suspect was involved in an accident and apparently collapsed. the cops did the right thing by getting him checked out. If they didn't, Imagine the fury and diatribe going on right now if the suspect died of a hemorrhage or something because the cops figured he was faking it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

well the police did their job ..

to bad for the kid .. he'll be imprisoned anywayz .. plus the public humiliation to boot :D

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The catheter was probably for a urine test.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

no smelling salts?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And the "Oscar" go to.....Yuji Matsumura...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Smart cookie: after three hours his blood-alcohol level was down to legal no doubt.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

this news is funny. i still think that the cops is doing the right thing through.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Where I come from he would have dragged by his goolies into a cop car and allowed to examine the thickness of a phone book, very closely.

Well, hooray for police brutality! Definitely something to be proud of.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I love the part when the guy woke up when his Mon arrived. Only his mom was able to help him, it means he is childish and kind, a sissy boy. The cops shall go after the real criminals - the perverts and sex abusers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For Yuji,it seems like he ejoyed the show. Now is the time to face the law.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wow wow wow keystone cops OWNED again............hahahahahahaha

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Still needs his mom to wake him up? What a loser. I haven't needed that since last week.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So the guy now has legal grounds to sue...

I seriously doubt that

0 ( +0 / -0 )

kirakira25: Sure he does, unnecessary medical procedure, humiliation or even grievous boldly harm since it was obviously done intentionally by the medical staff to invoke a reaction not fix a medical condition.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

his breathing and heartbeat were normal...Matsumura was quoted by police as saying: “I was tired, so I just went to sleep.”

Isn't it a bit dramatic to headline "Man feigns death" when the evidence is that he was only feigning unconsciousness?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Cicada: This is no different from western news - A man is caught on tape robbing a convenient store yet he is still identify as "a suspect". Innocent until proven guilty - sometimes even after the man admits his guilt...he hasn't had a trial so innocent until proven guilty [in a court of law].

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We should all applaud the actions of the police; their every move was according to the book.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's hard to feign death while breathing normally and with a normal pulse. The headline puzzles me.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

what article was norinrad reading?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Lets back up here a bit =He didnt flinch at the catheter? perhaps he should have been Cremated!-Then if this Nitwits ashes didnt shake he could prove his demise!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

unnecessary medical procedure, humiliation or even grievous boldly harm since it was obviously done intentionally by the medical staff to invoke a reaction not fix a medical condition.

Obviously done intentionally by medical staff to invoke a reaction? Grievious bodily harm? That`s a pretty big leap! I think you will find it is actually pretty standard procedure in cases where they are not sure what may be going on internally. Even if it was done maliciously that would be very hard to prove. As for the humiliation - I think he has pretty much taken care of that himself...

fusedentropy,

Article states:

Matsumura collapsed and pretended to be dead.

How could they know he was pretending to be dead? is what I was asking. In this news there is not even a hint of how they knew he was faking being unconscious, let alone that he was faking death.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Cicada: He either Admitted it, the police assumed it, the policed, after careful investigation, came to that conclusion.

fusedentropy:

The point is the reporter is only thoughtlessly repeating what the police said. Any decent journalist would have inquired, and relayed the information in the story. As it is, we just have the ridiculous suggestion that someone who is breathing normally, but not responding to insertion of catheter, is "feigning death". Quite possibly, the guy actually fainted, or at most was suspected of feigning unconsciousness.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

My mother once said, "The most difficult person to wake up is the one who is already awake."

0 ( +0 / -0 )

haaahahahahahaaha.........

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I thought it was a more sophisticated technique but he just pretended to be unconscious. feigns death
