Man gets 15 years in prison for arson-murder of 88-year-old woman

The Tokyo District Court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 15 years in prison over an arson-murder case in which an 88-year-old woman died in March last year in Tokyo's Itabashi Ward.

The court ruled that Takuto Nagaiwa, a former Asahi Shimbun deliveryman, was also responsible for seven other fires in the area, involving cars and bikes, Fuji TV reported.

Prosecutors said Nagaiwa set fire to the home of Fumiko Tosa at around 10 p.m. on March 17, 2014. The two-story wooden home was destroyed, killing Tosa and leaving her 65-year-old son with severe burns.

Street surveillance camera footage showed Nagaiwa in the vicinity of the house before and after the fire. During the next few hours, there were seven cases of cars and bikes being set on fire.

Nagaiwa said he doesn't remember what he did that night as he had been drinking heavily.

He destroyed several homes, injured several people, and killed one person....only 15 years? Really? I really don't understand the justice system in this country.

Nagaiwa said he doesn’t remember what he did that night as he had been drinking heavily.

Usually, I would laugh at this excuse because its become somewhat a cliche, but this guy is lower than pond scum, and this isn't funny!

He doesn't remember killing this poor woman. Ridiculous! An innocent person lost their life because of this low life drunk and he has he gonads to say that HE DOESN'T REMEMBER? Well I think as a reminder, he should be required to have a picture of the woman, and all of the lives he's ruined while going on his drunken fire setting spree, hung in his cell for the duration of his sentence, as a reminder of what a scumbag he is. Additionally,, he should be required to carry her picture on him for the rest of his miserable pathetic life so he doesn't forget who he killed and all of the lives his moment of STUPIDITY has affected.

I'm also disgusted at this! 15 years! That's nothing! 15 years to live on our tax money. He should have gotten 15 years for the arsons and death for the life he took.

if he did the crime let him rot, but he was convicted because he was in the general area? I seriously hope there was more evidence than that!

I've always been surprised at how lenient the Japanese courts seem to be in murder cases when the victims are elderly.

He'll get out of jail, write a book about it, the Japanese public will buy it up and he'll get rich.

Japanese justice.

How do you plead? "I was drunk and don't remember anything" . Case dismissed.
