Man gets 20 years for killing Japanese woman in Bali

I don't wish to speak ill of the dead but what on earth was that woman thinking? She invites two strangers she meets in a bar to come back to her home and then leaves them drinking while she goes to take a bath. What did she think was going to happen?

sad story. having been to Kuta many times, and Shimada being a long-term resident, one can only draw some conclusion as to why she was there. male prostitution is common among female j-visitors. don't believe me? Go there. The article doesn't mention drugs, which is surprising. a sad end.

What's that got to do with anything? If there was a particular religion that condoned murder, would that make it all right?

That is very relevant in Indonesia, which is struggling with increasing muslim demands to replace secular law with sharia. Notice also how lenient the sentence is. If the perp had been Hindu, you would be looking a more than 20 years.

I do wonder what was going through this woman's head that she would take a bath with two strangers in her house, but really, that is not the point AT ALL. They beat her, stabbed her, and raped her, and this guy gets 20 years. Disgusting.

WilliB, that's total BS mate. Bali is predominately Hindu and are very proud of this difference from other areas of Indonesia. Anyway, 20 years for murder seems like a pretty standard sentence anywhere in the world. Just think if this were a crime committed in Japan by a Japanese male against an Indonesian woman in the same circumstances?

thundercat-- Really? That doesn't sound standard to me, though I admit I'm not exactly caught up on every murder charge in the last 20 years worldwide. It seems extremely small for a brutal murder and rape. This wasn't accidental or anything.

Give me a break. This was a crime of opportunity, not something premeditated. You wouldn't even get 20 years in Japan for a this crime. Other than the death penalty (which this crime wouldn't fit the criteria for) the toughest punishment you can get is life in prison which is 25 years in Japan.

We'll never know her side of this story, will we? She could not take the stand to dispute testimony that "she" invited "them" back to her place for drinks: this is according to "court documents". Perhaps you know something this article has left out.

Let's see....brought to men home....had drinks and who knows what else...then upstairs to bathe...??? You be the judge of this one! Sad that it ended the way that it did...but I am guessing they would have gotten the prize if they had been patient and not demanded..

Thundercat, while murder itself in Japan may only bring a sentence of life ie: 12-20 years imprisonment in Japan, Murder for financial advantage ie robbing the lady is a crime covered by the death penalty.

all4faj, the case you present is correct IF it's premeditated. Very very very unlikely that anyone would get the death penalty in Japan for such a crime. In fact, I would argue that it is very unlikely someone would get 20 years in prison for such a crime in Japan.

Moderator: Stay on topic please. What the penalty for such a crime in Japan would be is, of course, irrelevant.

How do they know she went to bathe? the testimony of the two perps? Was there another witness? 20 years? I would give them a short drop with sudden stop, that's all they deserve.

hi Thundercat, I wonder how they work out whether its premeditated or not? In all honesty, I could be invited back to a strange girl's apartment, drink with her . let her go and have a bath, get knocked back and not kill her, rape her dead body and rob her. These dregs of society were always going to do this , if not to her then to someone else, or already had.

Or what are the two guys thinking? I don't think I buy their story. And even if it is true, you might think well, no surprise she got raped. But killed? That is just insane, and so are they.

Anyway, premeditated or not, whatever. These guys are too dangerous to take any chances with IMHO, and they would be in prison until they croak in my world.

Not that I'm condoning it or anything, as it's a terrible thing that these two men did. But thinking about it, Christmas Day (with Christmas eve being like Valentine's Day for many Japanese), a woman meets two guys in a cafe, an hour later invites them back to her place for drinks, goes upstairs to take a bath while they're there. Sounds like it could have been a wild threesome that just went too far, and in their panic the guys tried to make it look like a robbery afterwards.

20 years only to take another life. That is cheap!!! It looks like that the penalty for drugs is stronger.
