The Chiba District Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man to four years in prison for stabbing two teenage girls in two separate incidents on the same day in Chiba Prefecture in August 2016.
The court found Shun Ono of Fujimino, Saitama Prefecture, guilty of attempted murder, Fuji TV reported. Prosecutors had sought a six-year prison term.
In the first incident, which occurred at around 5 p.m. on Aug 22, 2016, Ono rode a bicycle up behind a 14-year-old girl and stabbed her in the abdomen as she walked along a street near JR Chiba Station. In the second incident, which took place at around 6:30 p.m. in Funabashi, 12 kilometers away from the scene of the first attack, Ono rode up behind a 19-year-old university student and stabbed her in the buttocks.
Both girls sustained serious injuries but recovered. They said they had never seen Ono before. Ono was arrested near the scene of the second attack.
In handing down the ruling, the presiding judge said that although a psychiatric evaluation of Ono indicated diminished mental responsibility, he nevertheless knew what he was doing when he attacked the girls.© Japan Today
