Man gets 50-year term for nine rapes

A 35-year-old man was sentenced to 50 years in prison Monday after being found guilty by a lay jury of committing a series of nine rapes between 2001 and 2010.

Judge Takao Katayama at Shizuoka District Court said Takashi Ozawa raped and injured nine women in Shizuoka Prefecture and other areas, TV Asahi reported. Katayama described the assaults as "cruel and atrocious."

Ozawa's defense lawyers said they will appeal the ruling, TV Asahi reported.

That's a nice lengthy sentence. I approve. Thank you, lay jurists.

He is lucky to be in Japan.. In China he would have gotten the bullet, and his family would have had to pay the price of it...

I totally approve castration (chemical or mechanical) for such monsters. We (as a society) should remove their ability of doing such things.

That monster should've gotten the gallows!!

The maximum sentence allowed under Article 14 of the Japanese penal code is 30 years. I commend the judge for giving this rapist 50 years.

Personally I think the bullet would have been kinder... to me as a tax payer. Now I have to pay for this scum to have 3 square meals a day, a nice safe and comfy cell, and 24 hour security for the next 50 years. I mean come on, this guy isn't getting out before he's 83, there's no hope he'll have any sort of productive life or chance to repay society, nor will any of his relatives even know who he is (most of them will be dead by the time he's out). He'll be an old man, and it is a monstrous and pointless waste of taxpayer money. If you don't approve of the death penalty then just exile him to an island or something. At least there he'll cost me nothing and have a chance to be marginally productive.

Actually this is a myth. Castration doesn't stop all rapists. A very small percentage of rapists suffer a hormone imbalance and removing or dissolving the testes does stop these rapists, but for most rapists the crime is about asserting their power over women, and these rapists won't be stopped even if you remove their penises, they'll just use something else, because its not about sex for them, its about asserting dominance.

Wow... I think that's the single-longest sentence I've heard someone getting in my time in Japan. Good on the judge for giving it, for it is well deserved.

ebisen: "He is lucky to be in Japan.. In China he would have gotten the bullet, and his family would have had to pay the price of it..."

True that, although I don't hold Chinese law as any kind of shining light we should all be looking to -- the death penalty is wrong, although I approve of swift justice.

"I totally approve castration (chemical or mechanical) for such monsters. We (as a society) should remove their ability of doing such things."

Chemical castration was created because mechanical castration is barbaric, and that's true. Much as people might think it's deserved, hacking off body parts just isn't the answer.

Frungy: While I disagree with your stance on the bullet, what I'm hoping is that the sentence sticks. I have a feeling that while the man won't win any freedom by any means, the sentence might be reduced from 50 years to a standard 'life sentence' (of 25 years or so). I hope that's not the case.

Prisoners never serve their full sentences in Japan. He'll be out in 10-15 years, guarenteed!

mechanical castration is barbaric, and that's true. Much as people might think it's deserved, hacking off body parts just isn't the answer.

Actually the chemicals used are so strong that the actual removal of testes might be the preferred variant (together with medication).. True, it will not cure the psychopaths with no hormonal imbalance..

the death penalty is wrong

until one (or one's family) is directly involved in such tragedies... Then the death penalty become attractive.

I am actually not supporting the death penalty, but I'm not against it as well. I just hope I will never have to go through what families of murder or rape victims go through... I can't even imagine what the victims of this rapist feel about him right now...

Moonbat ultra-feminist clap-trap. Its about sex and dominance. Both. At the same time. If it were not, that something else they switch to would more often than not cease to involve sex parts. Why do they go for sex parts rather than say, the ears? Or the bottom of the feet? The elbows? Because it also about sex.

Most rape is date rape, and your average run of the mill date rapist cannot be compared to this 9 count rapist I suspect.

You make it sound like the Holiday Inn. Do you know what Japanese prisons are like?

This is wonderful news!!

Personally I think the bullet would have been kinder... to me as a tax payer.

Considering that DNA tests have condemned men who later found to be innocent, I say tough luck about your yen. And if you are so concerned, I would say you have bigger fish to fry about your taxes than to be making callous statements like that about life and death.

Besides, he may yet sew enough wallets that he costs you nothing extra.

ebisen: "He is lucky to be in Japan.. In China he would have gotten the bullet, and his family would have had to pay the price of it..."

Unless he was well connected with the Party. In which case the victims would be threatened or paid off or their evidence ruled inadmissible and any policeman or prosecutor involved punished for involvement in the case.

758: You make it sound like the Holiday Inn. Do you know what Japanese prisons are like?

I dont freakin CARE, I have to pay for it. If he wants to pay for it like a Holiday Inn then let him stay, if not take hime out! The SCUM deserves it!!

Elbuda: This is wonderful news!!

Till he's out in 10 and gets a few more in before he is caught! Looks great on paper (IN the papers) but we all know its a farce!

Travis: Considering that DNA tests have condemned men who later found to be innocent

Ahhhmmm. and how many, in the last 10 years or so. Dont go back 20-25 when the tech was new, but recent. Zero/Zilch/Nada!!! Unless there was tampering, that is. And if we take the 1/1,000,000,000,000 approch then maybe we shouldnt incarcerate them either. What if they are innocent!

Do the best society can adn PROTECT society. In this case, and the one in china a week or two ago, pretty open/shut. Not a lot of question here. Close the chapter and save us that DO pay tax some YEN. And as for callous statements; what will you as a supporter tell the victims (or their families) if/when he does it again because he will be out. All of a sudden your statements become the callous ones!

Instead of 50 years they should send him to 50years in a real prison, as in a US prison. Then he will know what its like to get raped.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

The US and Japan should strike a deal that brings a few hundred hardened criminals from over-populated US jails to Japan. Mix the trash up a bit and see what kind of deterrent it can be. US crims would have to make a go of it in a totally different environment, while the J crims like the scum in this story might get a little karmic payback from big burly dudes named Bubba. In could make for some very interesting kokusairikai.

Depends, if the body part is the head....

But finally, some decent justice.

long sentece! waow that is rare in Japan

I hope he SERVES the 50 years and does not get out early for "good behavior".

Thanks OkiMike! Well at least this scum will not rape anyone while in jail right?? Be nice if they just hung him or better yet that he just hangs himself??

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Elbuda, I will second the motion.... ;)

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The Middle East way of sentencing out crimes like these should be considered: cut a portion of the offending body part.

Now to make things interesting, cut off a bit, then let it heal. One cut for every victim. If this is done, I doubt anyone will like to follow this one's footsteps.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Am I the only one here who sees this as excessive? A civilised system shouldn't be sentencing people to this amount of time, whatever they've done. This guy was either born sick or something happened to him to make him do it. Either way, he needs treatment. If the public need protection, he can be held in a secure hospital.

No child (except a psychopath) dreams of growing up to be a rapist, or any kind of criminal. The sooner the legal system recognises this, the sooner it can start to play a worthwhile role in society.

And the "What if it was your daughter/wife?" argument is irrelevant; justice should be carried out dispassionately. Simplistic, hate-filled, fear-driven ranting might give a few folk a bit of chewy satisfaction, but it does nothing to make anything better.

Otherwise, take it up with yer man Jesus. But don't expect much sympathy from him. He seems to have had pretty firm convictions about forgiving people, and distinguishing between the sin and the sinner.

Hm. I don't know if I would be so quick to say how "good" the judge did. After all, 9 rapes x 30 years is 270 years.

Well....it's about time!!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It is almost certain he will rape other prisoners in the slammer. The death penalty would have been the correct punishment - the Chinese have it right in this respect.

50 years? ... by that time his 85 years, wow not bad

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I think that he shouldn't see the light of day ever again.
