Man gets suspended sentence for killing and injuring about 100 cats

The Chiba District Court on Monday sentenced a 49-year-old man to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, after he was found guilty of violating the Animal Welfare Law by injuring cats with an air gun inYachiyo City last November.

The court said Yuichiro Hirata, a part-time worker from Chiba City, was first arrested on April 14 for killing a cat, Fuji TV reported. Hirata was quoted as saying, “I’ve killed or injured nearly 100 cats since three years ago. I got a thrill out of abusing cats.”

In addition to using an air gun, Hirata said he also poured boiling water on the cats, which he captured by luring them with food.

From February 2019 until Hirata's arrest, there had been 15 reported incidents of cats being shot by air pellets in Chiba City and neighboring Narashino City.

I dont get Suspended sentences!! How does that deter others?

guy who “gets a thrill” out of abusing cats gets suspended sentence….

if he’s very comfortable while harming other living beings he can fantasize about doing the same to small children. Jail time would be the best chance to stop this madman to escalate his actions but this is Japan after all

It says killing and injuring 100 cats in the headline - but then in the article it says he killed or injured nearly 100 cats.

Which is it ?

What a cruel man.

I hope 100 cats get their revenge and the pets owners also.

When he gets out of prison they will be waiting for him.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Dude needs to be institutionalized 1 year, for each cat he abused. 100 years would be justified in my opinion.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Wow. 3 years? SUSPENDED? Throw that sick maniac in a hospital where he belongs and get him to sort it out.

The legal concept of using punishment as a deterrence for further crime only works in Japan for those who ingest a prohibited combination of plant derived molecules. Not for torturing feeling beings.

I don't like cats. That's why I try to avoid them when possible. This guy has serious issues and too much free time

"There's a killer on the road, his brain is squirming like a toad...."

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I personally don't like cats. However, I wouldn't dream of doing this to cats.

Just the fact that someone kills/injuries a cat with an airsoft gun says something about the psyche of the person. And with this many, it's certainly not a one-off excess or an accident. And boiling water?

That he got a suspended sentence? I'm fascinated by the justice system here. How it only deals with one thing, but not the other, related things. The fact that the man is not completely mentally well is simply not taken into account. He is completely mental, a nutjob FCOL.

In countries where there is no prehistoric court system, he would serve his sentence and get treatment on top of it. Or a combination of both and serve the sentence in a medical institution.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

There is a link between harming animals and then moving on to people... This guy needs treatment and probably locking up.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Hirata Yuichiro obviously needs help.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

There's reams of documented cases of mass murderers showing their deviant ways started with the torture and killing of small animals.

We will see this guy's name in the news again, and it won't be associated with his murder of cats.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

And he is not the first to receive a suspended sentence. This seems to be the norm in Japan.

It is rare for a case of animal abuse to get to court. It is rare for the police to take any action. It is even rarer for any real punishment if a case does get punishment. Say gomenasai, bow, and get a suspended sentence. For animal abuse at least, it seems to work every time.

There are quite severe penalties for animal abuse in Japan, 5 years in jail and ¥5,000,000 maximum. However, they are never enforced. It appears such laws are tatemae, introduced after Japan was criticised in foreign press for a lack of animal protection. For example, a dog chained up on a one metre chain all would be considered abuse in most developed countries, but it is the norm here.

Pet owners have to be responsible for their pets. In my local government area if your cat is out roaming without a purpose made bid design to prevent injures or death to the wild life is consisted a feral pest. Even if has bell and or collar. It can be remove and deal with in a human way.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

Feral cats are a huge problem here in Japan, little wonder there are so few birds and native animals. There are more humane ways to eradicate cats though.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

One step away from doing it to people! This guy is a real worry and should be in jail or closely monitored. What's the bet he gets arrested for killing humans next!!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This is so wrong. Japanese justice is horribly mutated.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

The pervert should be confined in a high security psychiatric unit, not allowed to roam free on ‘probation’.

His name is known, so hopefully the good people of Yachiyo will get a thrill out of teaching him what the courts have failed to teach him.

Make him beg to be locked safely away.

The best method to rid feral cat is this trap the Csiro invented. It a camera that can distinguish cat from a bandicoot. When it sensor a cat it fires a poison gel pellet. This gel stick to the cat fur and when the cat groom itself and lick the gel and dies. I have bandicoots in my back yard all because the feral cat have all be removed humanly.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Far too light a sentence for a disturbing and sadistic crime

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Pouring boiling water on cats...........

He doesn't do this because there are too many feral cats which creates problems. He obviously does it because he enjoys seeing them suffer. I can't even imagine what those poor cats go through. This is guy is a threat to society,

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Another person suffering mental illness.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The perp is 49, a little late for escalating to human beings don’t you think? Cats seem to be his pet hate in his little world, and he sounds proud of what he did. Perhaps a way to him of relieving his frustrations in life.

it may be a suspended sentence but he now has a criminal record, no light thing in Japanese society. If he re-offends, the dominoes are stacked against him now.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Sadly we may well read about this but in the future when he moves onto humans as many mass murderers start off with animal cruelty. Dropped the ball here for sure.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Kniknaknokkaer: read my commits. In my area cat roaming around day or night without a purpose made bib which allows wildlife to escape unharmed will be remove and killed humanly. These cats even if collared will be treated as a feral cat pest. A pest is also rats mice feral dogs etc. So you want to protect problems cat. I want to save the native wildlife from irresponsible cat owners and cat weather they are pets or not. You are happy that the cat lives while it kills untold native mammals. And who is the sick and uninformed me of you.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

There is a link between harming animals and then moving on to people...

Agreed. He needs a proper psychiatric assessment. We're not talking about someone who hates cats and throws something at strays. He actively captured to torture them,

nandakandamanda

The perp is 49, a little late for escalating to human beings don’t you think?

Are you suggesting that possible psychiatric illnesses that cause a person to want to to harm others has an age limit - a young age limit of 49 at that??? Here's a man-child with a desire to harm and torture other living things, with a possible untreated psychiatric illness, who now feels even more powerless and trapped in is life as he has been caught for this, and will soon be back in society. Free to roam anywhere there are powerless animals; oh say, children's playgrounds for example. - But you're suggesting that won't be a problem because he's 49 years old. This logic escapes me.

Also, was he using a pellet air rifle instead of an airsoft gun? If so he needed to be licensed for it, and even if he was licensed for it, usually the courts are harsh on irresponsible gun use, even if it is just a pellet air rifle.

It is very common for homicidal psychopaths to have started with animals. I hope this guy does not "graduate" to people once he gets out.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A suspended sentence.

In other words, no punishment at all.

That'll teach him...to do it again.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

WilliB, “gets out”… of where?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The "suspended sentence" that scumbag deserves to to be suspended by his nutsack.

I got 9 down vote for advocating for saving native wildlife over feral cats .Who is more sick ??? the down voter or Yuichiro ????

I got 9 down vote for advocating for saving native wildlife over feral cats .Who is more sick ???

Thee is no mention in the article of feral cats, it's likely the majority of them were either strays or pets.

I imagine most of your downvotes were for your apparent sick glee in the poisoning of pet cats.

The pervert described in the article stated clearly that he got a thrill out of abusing cats. And you have to ask who is more sick??

Living in the Australian outback I've "removed" feral cats with athroty from the local council to prevent them killing wildlife and spreading disease.

But there's no way I could torture any anamal..even a cat.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Should be locked away for a while in a mental secure ward, a case for the psychiatrist. Something is wrong inside the brain with this guy, this is not normal behavior.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A suspended sentence for torturing and killing 100 cats, huh? Wow. So, how many cats can you kill before you actually have to do jail time?

Asking for a friend...
