Man held for killing wife's friend who mediated in divorce talks

A man in Fukuoka has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife's friend at his apartment after a divorce mediation session. According to police, Yoshihide Kawase, 27, allegedly stabbed to death 28-year-old Risa Kiura at his home at around 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

Fuji TV reported Friday that Kiura had been at the apartment to support Kawase's wife -- her friend -- who has attempting to discuss an amicable divorce settlement with her husband but was afraid for her personal safety due to several instances of domestic violence.

After the 30-minute meeting ended, Kawase is alleged to have stabbed Kiura multiple times in the neck and stomach with a kitchen knife. Kiura later died from her injuries. Police say Kawase has confessed to the murder.

They have divorce mediation at the local city hall. Never get your friends involved in this kind of thing. However, he has definitely put an end to the negotiations now.

Sounds like her fears were justified... Sadly. Where were the police in this? No one thought to consult them.

I hope the wife is alright. I'm sure she didn't come out of this unscathed.

buggerlugs - The police won't and can't intervene on domestic matters. Her only police option was a restraining order. Sadly, she should have been a bit smarter and not invited him to her home nor should she have got her friend involved. She should have gone straight to city hall, applied for divorce and set a mediation date at the shiaksho. Then, she should have swung by the cop shop and applied for a restraining order. However, getting a restraining order is not so easy either. Japan has virtually no domestic laws in regards to property settlement or joint custody and it is just left to the couple to decide. Or, should I say, it is left to the woman to decide and the man to accept whatever she demands.

@cracaphat in JP there is no choice. A third party has to witness a divorce request. Its primitive like I said, to involve your friends in divorce. drama waiting ti happen.

If you're afraid of your spouse due to instances of domestic violence, how the heck are you hoping for an amicable divorce settlement? Seems to me this discussion should have been conducted at a neutral location: like a hospital lobby.

Ironic that she ends up being the one sliced.
