Man held over attempted rape of woman in park toilet

Police in Tokyo said Wednesday they have arrested an unemployed 48-year-old man over the attempted rape of a woman in a park toilet in Ota Ward.

According to police, the incident occurred on June 8. TBS quoted police as saying that the woman in her 20s was walking home from work late at night when the suspect, identified as Nobuyuki Kanto, approached her and asked for directions to the nearest train station.

Police said Kanto pulled out a knife and dragged the woman into a park toilet. Police said he molested the woman for about 30 minutes before she was able to get away.

Police said that DNA test of semen left at the scene matched that of Kanto who is also being questioned over his involvement in other similar attacks.

The suspect has so far kept silent, police said.

That is the difficult point, isn't it? Often, if a woman or girl or boy or man want to have a sexual assault taken seriously, it is necessary for there to have been penetration. Unless that is the extent of the act, it is often seen as less of a crime, even if the person was held down, forced to do or endure certain unwilling acts, experience violence or intimidation or even pain. But, whether it can be considered rape, a crime, is up to whether or not he penetrated. That would make sense for would-be attackers to avoid that one point to get a lesser sentence. If that were the definition of rape, and not his goal , then even "attempted rape" may not be the correct label. Attempt has to have intention. What did he attempt to do? Does he do this often but never penetrates? For her, it will nonetheless be a traumatic and wrongful experience. We will see what the courts decide. He could be out on the streets again. Here is a book we might well read to understand what a person of an "attempted rape" must go through to see a trial to the end. The recipient of the act is often-times more scrutinized than the aggressor. "What was she wearing?" "Why was she alone?" "Had she been drinking?" "Did she give off the wrong impression?" And on and on. If she was our wife or daughter or sister or mother, where would we draw the line of relief? Many crack under the pressure. We don't know whether it was rape or attempted rape. It depends on the legal definition of rape. For example, if there were no penetration, then the act might not be considered rape. The guy might have masturbated in front of the woman. Also, perhaps the police and woman do not want the stigma of rape hanging over her. We don't know and shouldn't presume anything. If the police say attempted rape, that's sufficient.

To all female (and male) readers interested in learning Self Defense, I teach a class once a month at a community center in Yokohama. It takes about a full day, with hands on training on mats. Cost is donation based as the main point is to get women more prepared to handle such events. PM me for more info!

This is sexual assault - that word molestation is inadequate and misleading and should not be used. As for mace, it's illegal, and rightly so.

Semen could be on his clothes or her clothes as she resisted.

As someone who has experienced "molestation" of various levels at various ages, I can tell you that this is not going to be easy for her to overcome. I do not really like the use of the word "molestation" because it in no way even comes close to the degradation and sometimes horror that a child or adult experiences when they are violated in some sexual, mental way. Add to that the terror of being trapped, alone with a perpertrator in a public toilet in a park late at night while he ejaculates, the only good point of that would be that she actually got his semen enough on her somehow to have the DNA checked so that he could be caught, identified and somehow brought to justice. Her sense of security and dignity was removed. Her joy of life was taken away by that 30 minutes of terror she experienced. Okay, until the police and justice system bring it to trial, we can refer to it as "attempted rape." But, for her it won't matter what the legal system decides.

Japanese females should learn one of old old time ku-no-ichi martial arts that she can knock chikan down. While he is unconscious, run away to report about the attacker.

You would think that a man asking a women for direction to a train station is a misdirection! This seems to be the typical approach these pervs use from what I am reading lately What idiots!! I say cut it off an hang it around his neck!

@yongyang: What? The fact that he may or may not have had a smartphone is irrelevant. He didnt stop her because he was, that was obviously a ruse to rape her!

The cans are rather large, but bear spray is an alternative. Self defense classes might be getting more customers in the future.

Spanki, I heard that Mace is illegal here in Japan. If someone knows where to get some, please post it.

@CrazyJoe

Rape is better prevented than punished.

That's easier said than done... in ANY country...

Rape (attempted rape) is a violation of virtue and dignity that often leaves crippling physical injuries and lifetime emotional scars. Rape is better prevented than punished.

What other deterrent can we have to STOP rape?

Corporal punishment!

2 ( +10 / -8 )

@M3, the man was unemployed, maybe not enough disposable cash for a SmaPho.

Chemical castration on the books? Yes? No? What other deterrent can we have to STOP rape?

In the age of the smartphone, we should probably start being a bit more suspicious of people asking us for directions nowadays.

Another sex offender bites the dust! Keep your wits about you gals! Japan is a safe country, unless you are a woman or a child (or both).

Lock him away for long time but realistically, I think he would serve 2 years and get out when he's still a menace.
