Police in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, on Monday arrested a man over the death in October 2009 of a 2-year-old girl who was in his care.

The man, who has been identified as unemployed Shinya Sato, 31, was dating the girl's mother, Megumi Konaka, 29, at the time of the incident. Police allege that Sato was alone in a room with the girl, named Misaki, on Oct 22 when the incident occurred, and that he hit the girl on the head. He then took her to hospital where it was found that she had suffered brain damage following the assault. She died on Nov 6 of the same year.

According to police, Sato has been charged with manslaughter.

Unbelievable..... Who would hit a 2-year girl on the head...?

I agree mindovermatter hitting a small child is a terrible act that anyone could ever do.

Usually the unemployed guy living with the girls mother does not take the kid to hospital after hitting. I wonder if he has admitted to the allegations or if he has confessed after being questioned since October?

AFTER being questioned. He initially said the girl fell off the stairs.

The mother had 3 other children and she had to go to one of the kids' school event that day and left the 2-year-old with the boy friend.

Their neighbors heard the mother crying saying Please stop while the kids screaming in the middle of the night more than several occations which suggests the boyfriend was abusive and I don't know how the mother felt okay to leave the girl with him alone.

I know it is work to take all kids to a school event and the girl was 2 years old, not easy to take a 2-year-old with other kids all by yourself, but still, the mother should have taken this girl along with other kids, or she should have left the girl at a daycare..

Why did it take so long?

Poor girl. I hope she hasn't been 'in his care' over the last two years. Yes, why did it take so long? Put this guy away!

29 and already 4 children??! That is one busy mother! But I agree, if the guy was abusive (and from what the nrighbours say it sounds like it) why on earth would you leave the baby with him. If youve got 3 kids to deal with anyway, you may as well take the 4th along - you are going to be run ragged anyway. Im sure he probably didn`t mean to kill her, but he did - anyone abusive to a child should be locked up and the key thrown away.

I`m also wondering why it has taken over a year to bring about an arrest.

And for some reason Japanese authorities still believe the child is better off with the mother than the father after a divorce. I guess they never consider that the mother will take up with scum like this guy.

Guilty. A 2-year old does bash herself in the head.

Some people get bitter at children brought from a former relationship. They see the kids as an annoying obstacle. Most of those people just try to drive a wedge in between the kid and biological parent. The true losers actually abuse the kids. The biological parent is often too weak to fight it or too naive to see it until its too late.

This idiot mother should also be held responsible, leaving her daughter with her filthy boyfriend? What a stupid, stupid thing to do!
