Police said Thursday they have arrested a health care worker for allegedly stealing 5,800 500-yen coins from a friend's home in Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Kyosuke Yamamoto, 33, allegedly stole a total of 2.9 million yen from the 59-year-old logistics worker's home, Sankei Shimbun reported. The stolen coins apparently weighed around 40.6 kilograms.
The two men had been friends since attending a technical school together, and Yamamoto had been living there since October. On Dec 12, Yamamoto apparently smashed a glass case containing the coins when he thought his friend was not home. About 3.8 million yen in small change was left at the scene.

Sorry, I have to ask...what is he doing with 5800 500yen coins? 2.9M yen in coins is kind of overboard and dumb
jforce
Is the detail of it being in 500¥ coins that important? Wouldn't it be better to just say, 2.9 mill ¥? MInd you, save those coins people! It does add up.

@Mirai The guy had about 6.7 million yen in total, in coins displayed in his house, which is shared with an old friend ...
"Small change" ... I would assume these would be 1~100 yen coins.
Displaying money would tempt almost everyone.

Maybe he was saving up to buy a new kidney!

Yes. If it had been cash he wouldn't have left over half the money before running. 40kg not an easy getaway.

Hmmmmm.......6.7 million in change....now I regret mocking that former PM for having 700 million in cash lying around the house and saying it was quite common of him...obviously I must rush to the bank, withdrawal my savings and leave it around my house if I wish to assimilate better.

Did he put it in his bike basket?

Sad old git that I am, I also save 500 Yen coins. Comes in handy when I pay my key money on renewal of tenancy.

jforce, I know your name contains "force", but have you ever imagined how much 6.7 mil. yen weights when in 500 Yen coins? Almost 100 kg... Not exactly something one can put in the pocket and run...

And it all started with bragging rights: "Hey bro, let me show you all these coins I got. Can you believe it!" . How dumb.

Well, I guess if you follow Ozawas lead and keep 600 million Yen in cash in your house, then keeping it in 500 Yen coins is not a bad idea. Any potential robber would have to work hard for it... 10 tons of coins are not easy to carry.

Makes sense to me .

Not newsworthy in my books. Weird news maybe, but for the crime section of a national news website? Naah.

With friends like this he certainly does not need any enemies.
